Cole Porter: can anyone recommend

A compilation or collection of covers from an artist? I thought about this in another thread where the movie De-Lovely was discussed (a good movie).

Icicle

The only albums i can think of is Ella Fitzgerlds` Cole Porter songbook and Dionne Warwick`s "Dionne Warwick sings Cole Porter". They`re both worth getting...

I could on and on about what 2 get.

If U don't already have any of Sinatra's renditions, then get them. With Frank, U gotta hear both his Caitol years and his Reprise years. Sinatra formed Reprise records so he could do what he wanted 2 do musically. He swings harder in the Reprise stuff. At any rate, Sinatra's "Under My Skin", and "Night and Day" R just 2 of the must haves.

NOW...

Go and get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Nig...19-0527340

and this:

http://www.amazon.com/Get...19-0527340

These R the 2 best collections out there, with some of the greatest jazz singers in our history.

Peace.

G.

I'd agree with all of the above. Especially the Fitzgerald & Sinatra suggestions...

...with maybe this thrown in for good measure.

Funny, 2 Roy DuNann engineered discs i've just listened to have two fine instrumental versions of You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To (Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section) and I Love You (For Real! - Hampton Hawes)

There are also nice versions of Love for Sale and Everytime We Say Goodbye on another CD I keep in heavy rotation...

...Falling In Love Again

Harlepolis

Billie Holiday nod maybe I'm biased,,,,but its hard to add to what she did becoz she re-writes nearly all of the standards she recorded to suit her own reading, whereas some others stay true to the original renditions nod

Now I love Billie, and frankly, Harlepolis, I love U... BUT...

Sinatra, Ella, Dinah, Anita O'Day, Louis Armstrong, Mel Torme, Sarah, and most every other jazz singer has their own unique phrasing and renditions of the Cole Porter songs, as the original renditions R nearly unlistenable tin pan alley musicals, sung by the actors. Billie is certainly one of greatest examples of this, as R the singers I listed above. The 2 links I gave (for volumes 1 and 2), are, in fact, the best collections, that feature all of the above mentioned singers, except, ironically enough, Sinatra, as they couldn't get the rights to Sinatra's versions. By the way, Sinatra loved Billie, and he had said more than once that she was his fav singer.

He wrote this great witty song called 'Anything Goes' recorded by Ella.
Yall know it? It was the theme song from a musical under the same title.

The song describes (and mocks) the triumph of perversity in western culture, which makes it even more relevant today then it was during the 1930's.
I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

Oh yes she did inflence him. A lotta folks don't realize how early Billie was singin'. Folks tend 2 only focus on her later years.
