Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, U2, Boy George among the winners at the Q awards

at 17:57 on October 30, 2006, EST.

LONDON (AP) - Oasis, the Arctic Monkeys, U2 and former Culture Club frontman Boy George picked up honours Monday at the Q Awards for music.

Oasis was named the "best act in the world today," while the Arctic Monkeys won the people's choice award and best album honours for "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not." Readers of Q magazine chose many of the honorees.

U2 received the Q "award of awards," The Who received the legend award and Peter Gabriel picked up a lifetime achievement award.

Boy George - who swept New York's streets in August as punishment for falsely reporting a burglary at his apartment - was given the classic song award for the Culture Club's 1980s hit "Karma Chameleon."

"I'm so glad to get this award because it means you now recognize me again as a singer and not a road sweeper," Boy George, 45, said at the awards ceremony, held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel.

Smokey Robinson, honoured for his outstanding contribution to music, said he was touched by the award.

"To know I have had some sort of an impact on your lives through music is so special to me," the 66-year-old singer said. "This has been my childhood dream."

wow, the Q awards seem to have a lot of meaningless lifetime acheivement awards to give out to people so the audience will actually care instead of just having to watch them give out the best song, album, etc. awards to a bunch of hipsters that all of Q's readers are going to hate 2 weeks from now.

Oasis are garbage.

Everyone kisses their arse without knowing what little talent they have.
I own every oasis album and thought they were great until i found out none of it is original at all.

It's like that EVERY year. Lord knows why so many people turn up for it. It's just a joke that they have to hold it at the Grosvenor Hotel.

Greatest Hits out for Christmas, a few favours changing hands at the record company to give them a bit of needed publicity before it's released.

It pays to be cynical.

Boy George - who swept New York's streets in August as punishment

Translation: who doesn't deserve the award..

exactly my friend; hype without the talent

Oasis are so popular people are scared to sue them because of a backlash;

rod stewart/faces after noel stole the headshrinker guitar riff
stereophonics after noel stole the hindu times riff

the list goes on and on; every single riff is stolen. So are the bass parts and drum intros such as; force of nature, fucking in bushes, live forever, supersonic e.t.c

Award of awards? Not that U2 aren't deserving of many awards, but it is suspicious that they receive this aroudn the time of a new Greatest Hits album. Same with the Who's legend award. Don't they have a new album coming out soon?

Sod that! Noel's idiotic-simplistic lyrics are on a par with Barney Sumner's out of New Order for worst ever written status. Only New Order were (and still occasionally are) a great group, whereas Oasis were, are and always will be the luckiest birthdays, weddings and bar mitvahs covers band alive. lol
