The Barkays put on the best show I've seen.
Andy is a four letter word.

Today? Gosh, so many of my faves are hip-hop artists (who aren't by and large great performers), dead or retired, or otherwise just not that great live.

1. Prince: a show-stopper, a versatile musician, good voice, great charisma, unforgettable songs. Should be a consensus No. 1 IMHO

the others are in no particular order, considering I don't go to many live shows, and judging from the shows I've seen live or recorded. This extraordinarily limited list of LIVING performers is as follows.

2. Michael Jackson
3. Janet (puts on a good show)
4. Parliament
5. Steely Dan
6. Sting
7. Earth, Wind and Fire
8. McCoy Tyner
9. AC/DC
10. A Tribe Called Quest

Prince
Diamanda Galas (her studio recordings don't do her live performance justice)
Peaches
Princess Superstar (i've seen TONS of PS shows, none of them had a dull moment)
Justin Bond & Kenny Melman (a/k/a "Kiki & Herb")
Sandra Bernhard
Sonic Youth (just give Thurston a guitar and put him in front of me and i'm good to go)
David Bowie (he can be a little rote at times, but his mere BOWIEness is amazing)
The Residents
Laurie Anderson (for purely sentimental reasons, though she puts on a wonderful show)

honorable mentions: Courtney Love, Sufjan Stevens (I know, I know...total opposite ends of the spectrum, ha)

how many times you seen Erykah?

I saw her two nights in a row on the WWU tour in 04 (LA and SD) and once on the Sugarwater tour in 05 (Concord).
