My oldie of the day is "Across 110 Street" by Bobby Womack Across 110 street, by Bobby Womack was released in 1972 and it's full of soul and grit.
It was one of the soundtracks to "Jackie Brown" and it sums up the film for me, as well as summing up life in the early 70s for struggling black folks in general. Folks just can't make music like this anymore. [Edited 10/29/06 1:46am]

I love that song.
Beautiful chorus. Thematically, the song is a bit similar to Isaac Hayes' 'Soulsville' I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at the dirt.

James, Marvin, and Stevie might have something to say about that. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

James, Marvin, and Stevie might have something to say about that. Fair enough. But I personally relate more with the one I mentioned.

She sung background for Bobby Womack [Edited 10/29/06 20:59pm]

She sang background for Minnie Riperton too(in one of her albums, can't remember which one) they were friends.
Speaking of Jackie Brown, her song "Long time Woman" was used for the movie(the scene where she gets in jail). BTW great use of Roy Ayres grooves,,,they made a helluva score for the movie(altho they were attached from different albums and an old movie :lol).

He's DEFINATELY one of mine. What up, player?! Bobby is hella underrated. All the glory goes to Marvin and Al, who were great. But Bobby had something else going for him. But yeah, along with "Harry Hippie", "Across 110th Street" is one of my all-times by anyone. His lyrics to this is off the hook. "You'll never know what you'll do when you're put under pressure. A 110th St is a helluva tester." That's a brilliant line. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I tend do co-sign... of course it's tough to compare artists at such a high level, cause everyone has a different vibe... but for sure Bobby is in my personal top group right up with the other "biggies" and the song is classic of course. just came to me that I haven't seen the movie in ages... Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

It's from a 1973 movie of the same name, but Pam Grier isn't in it: I have this DVD.The theme song by Bobby Womack is played during the beginning credits, but interestingly,it is another version....sounding more like a demo version. It's not the familiar version that was released as a single. As for the movie itself...it's alright. Not really one of my favorite "blaxploitation" flicks.
