Jay-Z is a running, rapping advertisement. Its all naming brand names with him. Lil' Kim does the same thing with less finess. He is highly overrated in my opinion. I guess you have to be from "neu yawk" to appreciate him fully.

Im from New York and I dont look at him the way others do. To me he is just another rapper. Now 2pac..Thats a diff story

Yeah me too, and im not feeling he is a "New Yorker" at heart, just because he put a club here dont mean shit, i mean so did Puffy, doesnt make him a new yorker at heart. Jay Z i have always felt has been overhyped, though Reasonable Doubt is a great statement, i never understood how people could compare him and Nas, i mean really now, thats almost like comparing Ne-Yo to Marvin Gaye, alright maybe not that drastic, but close

Well, comparing Illmatic to Reasonable Doubt is really unfair, like comparing an athlete in his prime to a month old stiff. The only thing I can say in Jay Zzzzzz's favour is that he is very productive, churning out albums like most people fart. The trouble is most of what he churns out is tired, boring crap you know you heard done way better last year. I mean, how many times did he use that Carlito's Way line? And those Scarface quotes? I admire him for his business savvy though, I'll give him that. But I admire Diddy for the same reason - and his acting chops, which are actually quite considerable.

LOL. Honestly I feel Nas more than I do Jay z. I never understood why ppl over do it with him. I'd rather hear Nas talk, rap whatever than Jay z. And now that he and Beyonce all over each other..ill its makin me sick cuz that chick is nuts now. Fuckin nuts lol

The "Show Me What You Got" song is ok, but doesn't do much for me. Now the B-side, "Kingdom Come", may go down with some of my all-time Jigga songs. That one is worth the hype- we'll see how the album is.

can you or someone else explain to me how he is considered one of the greatest rappers of all time? what about Melle Mel yo? his flow was tight and he enunciated his words. something most rappers don't/can't do!

Hold up- I've never been on the "Jay-Z's in the Top 3" bandwagon, however-

Jay's one of the best at it right now. He's not the greatest of all-time for several reasons, 1 of them being that he only raps about his money, his drug dealing past, or why he's the all time best. True MC's talk about more than that.

Lyrically, he's one of the best now, but that wasn't always the case. Reasonable Doubt doesn't impress me (but it's a great album) like either of the Biggies, Makavelli, or Illmatic. On the other hand, Blueprint and Black Album had some great lyricism. Also, Blueprint and Black Album stepped it up for rappers to stop making 1 or 2 radio singles and re-consider doing full albums again.

"Takeover" on Blueprint- that's straight hip hop and why I love the artform- Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would have never blasted LA/Babyface and the Calloway Bros. like that in the '80's smile Also, "PSA" and "99 Problems" on Black Album were 2 of the best rap songs of it's year, even though he's rapping about his money and drug dealing.

As far as rapping goes- Jay's got a great voice. His lyrics are simple in terms of how many syllables he uses per line, but very complex in terms of his word play. Plus, his lyrics are witty and clever at the same time, and that's very hard to do for a radio single. Lastly, he has lyrics that you can relate to and/or aspire to. On the Kanye remix, he said "it's nothing to me/Difficult takes a day, Impossible takes a week". Sorry, but I'm not that old school. Melle Mel never came as hard like that to me.

oh my god, come to think of it, isn't the video similar to touch the sky too? with the whole race car thing? what the hell? can kanye sue him for that? for copying the song and video?

The new song is ok, but I am not a fan of Jay-Z. He's pretentious and boring. Someone said he's all about labels and I totally agree yawn His new video is very typical. Doesn't interest me at all.

The fact that he's come out of "retirement" is a huge joke to me. These people kill me. Do they even know what retirement means? To them it means - put out another album and get even richer barf
