I don't get as much a Smiths vibe from The Dears as much as I get an early solo Morrissey vibe. But I haven't listened to that much of their stuff so I could be wrong. Either way, the lead singer is a big Morrissey/Smiths fan and it shows in the way he sings.

Was a good year for bouncy HH club jams tho.
Control Myself, Black Sweat, Shake That, Promiscuous, Flaunt It, Temperature... And Front Line Assembly's "Artificial Soldier" came out to amp up the loudness wars so it was okay. I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world.

Classic albums: Bob Dylan – Modern Times Scott Walker – The Drift Great Albums: Bonnie Prince Billy – The Letting Go Pernice Brothers – Live a Little Disappointments: Pet Shop Boys – Fundamental – not truly awful, but the latest in a series of drab, mediocre albums. The Mountain Goats – Get Lonely – where did the melodies go? Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood – everybody else seemed to love this, but I thought it was too dreary and too low-key to be really engaging. I’ve yet to hear the Decemberists and Yo La Tengo records, both of which are rumored to be quite good. Totally agree with you on Mountain Goats and Pet Shop Boys. Not really loving Pernice Brothers, unfortunately. It's not bad, but the songs aren't sticking the way they did on the last album. My biggest disappointment of the year was the Rapture, by far. Way too cutesy. Overall, I don't think it's been as good as last year, but that was a real anomaly. My tops so far (in some kind of quickly changing order): Yo La Tengo The Roots Basement Jaxx Lily Allen Beck Lindsey Buckingham Hold Steady Dylan Van Hunt Gnarls Barkley Scissor Sisters Night Ripper [Edited 10/24/06 4:48am] [Edited 10/24/06 4:49am]

Time will tell. On the Jungle Floor is far and away my favorite album this year, but there were great releases by Gnarls Barkley, Nelly Furtado, India.Arie, Robin Thicke, and Guster. I also enjoyed the latest from Prince and Justin Timberlake. I still need to get the Roots album. Tim Finn's latest is in the mail right now. The Cure remasters are excellent. With the state of music as it is right now, that probably qualifies as a good year. [Edited 10/23/06 19:54pm] "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

[Edited 10/23/06 19:54pm] I totally agree with you about the Van Hunt album. I love that he released such a trashy sounding album in a time of super produced slick pop records. I didn't hear great things about the rest of the Gnarls Barkley album and from what I heard, it hadn't even sold platinum by the end of the summer despite all the play "Crazy" got.

I can't speak for American or British music but I can tell you Australian music has been awesome this year. So much great music, I've loved it. Wolfmother, Eskimo Joe, The Veronicas, Hilltop Hoods, it's all been good. Wolfmother is going to be so huge in coming years (I talking Sabbath or Zeppelin HUGE!).

Nellie McKay - Pretty Little Head (Oct 31st) I scored the unreleased version of this, though it was a little disappointing...the writing doesn't seem as on-point. Think the one coming out has more tracks, so I'm definitely going to pick it up and give another proper listen.

Personally, 2006 has been an excellent year for me and music. Not so much to do with new releases, but sometimes you get back what you put into it.

The lead singer's voice has a real Morrissey-like quality at times. The music is very melodic, dramatic,textured...good. So far I've heard 2 of their albums: No Cities Left(2004), and their latest Gang of Losers(2006). They are both stellar albums, IMO. They have a lot stuff on youtube. CHeck out "22: The death of all the romance". Their my space page has 4 songs from gang of losers. [Edited 10/24/06 11:18am] A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

This is how I feel generally. I stopped caring about pop radio a long time ago, so I discover music at my own pace. My favorite "new" music of the past year is the Kinks! My Legacy

Illustrator said: MikeMatronik said: Cirque du soleil Wait.... the Beatles are playin' Vegas now? LOVE is an upcoming soundtrack album release by The Beatles for the Cirque du Soleil show, LOVE. The new album will be released in November 2006 and features music designed for the LOVE show.[1] Producer Giles Martin commented that "What people will be hearing on the album is a new experience, a way of re-living the whole Beatles musical lifespan in a very condensed period."[1] George Martin and his son Giles began work on LOVE after getting permission from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, representing John Lennon and George Harrison respectively. They "worked from the original master tapes from the Abbey Road studios to produce a medley of Beatles music by remixing favorite songs, such as Harrison's "Within You Without You" being played to the drum-track of "Tomorrow Never Knows"."[2]

There were some albums I liked to varying degres (Prince, Gnarls Barkley, Pet Shop Boys, Janet) but also the usual albums that I bought and never got into (Beck, Elvis Costello, Outkast, Kelis, Teena Marie). I'm hoping next year is better....Might depend on if Bowie releases something.

Most of you don't know her or her work, but she really leaps above the average pop singer/composer. Pure beauty. This girl is a true artist. Shame western pop stars don't have the courage she has...and the talent. I LOVE Utada, but I really prefer to hear her sing in Japanese personally and Keep Tryin has got to be one of the perkiest and catchy songs ever! But yeah, Ultra Blue is a great album If you will, so will I
