Also,a movie about the Philadelphia Sound. The story of Gamble and Huff is very intriguing.

nod exactly.

i'd like to see a James Brown movie. I mean a full motion picture James Brown movie not that straight to tv or dvd stuff.

Jackie Wilson
Sam Cooke
Bobby Womack
Isaac Hayes
The Commodores (this should be interesting)
Patti LaBelle
Otis Redding (this one would be a tear jerker)
The Four Tops
The Bee Gee's
The Police
George Clinton
Teddy Pendergrass
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Rick James.

In which Dave Chappelle will portray him confused

Dave Chappelle is fine for what he does, sketch comedy. However, for a serious role, he's totally wrong. I don't think he could be serious if his life depended on it and he looks nothing like Rick James or Prince. Teena Marie has even said that the famous line "I'm Rick James bitch" is not what Rick was known for saying. Rick used to say "I'm Rick motherfuckin' James".

I'd love to see someone like Kaufman (Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine) script the story of Thelonious Monk or Ornette Coleman. I love Monk, don't really know Coleman's work, but it seems like it would be a good fit.

Someone should pitch a 'Trane biopic to Spike Lee.

I stopped patronizing comedians who portray musicians in biopics after what Jamie Foxx done brough to the table.

The idea of Dave portraying Rick in a SERIOUS bio makes me cringe too,,,but I'm willig to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Spike got the burden of making Jackie Robinson and Joe Lewis' biopics(as he promised to their family,,,and the audience).

Would love him to make a movie about Duke Ellington,,but considering that he made "Mo' Better Bluse" which is one chaotic group of attached scenes, I have mixed feelings about him doing a JAZZ movie.

I disagree.

I find Mo'Better Blues to be one of Lee's most "linear" movies. The storyline is fairly coherent.

His father being a musician, and his familiarity with 'Trane"s work (having inserted "Tunji" and "Acknowledgement" into the movie), indicate that Spike could handle the flick with the same understanding and detail that resulted in Malcolm X.

I don't ?uestion his knowledge or passion on musicianship,,,I do however, ?uestion his use of making a storyplot out of a jazz movie. There're details that you shouldn't just 'skip' for the sake of making an accessible storyline(although, for his credit, he's not accessible for Hollywood standards).

Malcolm X, while it was a good movie, it was abit unfair for the legacy of Malcolm. I think the movie leaves a GREAT deal of importent details of shaping El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbazz that the audience need to know. Thats why I always stress that folks need to go back to the autobiography,,,,thats their MOST credible resource to the late minister.

The movie is what introduced me to the book, gotta give the credit,,,but after reading the book, it left me SHOCKED to see alot of relevent information that didn't make it to the motion picture.

Rarely does a movie do complete justice to a book or a life. He would have needed to make a miniseries to cover all that ground.

I read the a/b one year before the movie, and I saw it as being pretty doggone fair.

I don't think making a film about the life of Coltrane would be fundamentally different. You'd need someone who can a) tell a story and b) understands the nuances of the subject matter. From the outside looking in, I'd give Spike a good shot.

The cat has the best acting chops in the family. I wish he'd get some more roles along those lines.
