Abbey Lincoln Tribute Thread

I don't think I heard much of her in here...

Her stunt with Max Roach till 1970 marked the peak of her career nod

Sadly, the US weren't ready for her then(esp when she transformed from her sex kitten image).

During her sex kitten years: http://www.youtube.com/wa...ed&search=

She said she burnt that dress(Miss Monroe's dress from Gentlemen prefer them Blondes) after she got sick of being associated with Monroe.

During her Max Roach years: http://www.youtube.com/wa...AGQQhFSy5g

Thats durig the period when Jazz critics slammed her for not doing the cabaret routine(ala Ella, Hazel Scott and Sarah Vaughan).

I found this way back in '78 and really enjoyed it.

.

She was more into the more modern stuff and sangher own songs or added vocals to jazz standards. F'r instance, she added vocals to Coltrane's "Africa" and with her own song "People In Me". It made a great match. I drove down to see her in San Francisco at Keystone Korner: an old jazzclub with the 2-drink minimum rule. That was a great evening and she put up a wonderful performance.

I don't like her voice, I think she's a better actress than singer.

omfg

I always thought that her music career make up for her acting.

Though I loved her in Ivan Dixon's Nothing But A Man. That movie is truely ahead of its time(along with A Raisin In The Sun).

Cute portrait in For the love of Ivy. Although she was forced to wear wigs in both of those movies(she was sporting a natural/afro).

"People in Me" has to be one of my favorite songs by her. The kids singing with her is what makes the song special to me.
