Jonny Lang 31 Oct 2006 Kentucky Theatre

Hey guys. I just got back from the Jonny Lang concert at the beautiful Kentucky Theatre a few moments ago. A little back story on the venue then I will get into the concert. Check out their website here http://www.kentuckytheater.com/ . They host a series of acoustic concerts yearly for the Troubadour Concert Series. Check out their website here http://www.troubashow.com/ . But anyway, I saw Jonny last year at the same venue, but it was an acoustic show. This years concert put him back in touch with his electric side and he had an amazing 4 piece backing band, Reeve Carney(Guitar), Jim Anton(Bass), Charles Jones(Keys), Barry Alexander(Drums). Barry is like a young John Blackwell, totally amazing. And Mr. Jones, well, lets just say he puts us inmind of another "large" man who used 2 work for a Purple 1. The concert started out with Reeve Carney and the Revolving Band, which wasn't for most of the audience's taste, **Think 60's pyscho-pop** After a 35 minute opening set and a 20 minute stage change, Jonny took to the stage and opened with "Long Time Coming" and the crowd took off with him. Everyone from the 12 y/o girls screaming his name to the 70 y/o grandmother behind me was on their feet. It is a whole new sound coming from him, not the same as I have heard on his last couple of albums or the last time I saw him live. It seems he is turning a bit towards the spiritual path that some artists have taken as of late. But the guitar was off the hook. I counted 8 standing ovations and one lady pass out (kinda hot in the theatre and she had 2 much 2 drink). He played the favorites (Including "I Am" which I was going to be pissed if he didn't play--this is the one Prince wrote for him) and a couple of songs off of his new album. I am kinda still wrapped up in the experience & I know I'm not making much sense so I will just let everything go with one final sentence until I have had some sleep. This kid/man/guitar god will be around, and hopefully with more radio/tv play than he has had in the past. REAL MUSIC BY REAL MUSICIANS applies here more than anything I have seen this year.
