Have you all heard about this? What happened? Is it because most people have Ipods so they are downloading music instead of buying? I'm sad because i've been shopping there for so long and I don't own an Ipod. I'm one of the very few peeps still buying cds. Sorry but I can't get with the Ipod system.

I grew up on Tower, was there religously every Tuesday. Though I haven't been there in years - perhaps ten - it's sad to see it go.

I only hope you have some slick independents in your neighborhood...

bc

not in my neighborhood but near to where i work there is a Rasputin Music and they are pretty good.

BTW, does anyone have a link on this? I mean, we've been hearing lots of mummuring for a while and I heard they were at some stage that didn't look good.

I just passed by Tower in Greenwich Village earlier today. There is a huge 'going out of business' sign on the front of the store with discounts on all CDs and most magazines. No refunds (all sales final) and no more ticketmaster sales. sad

The one near me has ALOT of competition. It's in Emryville(CA) and it's losing business to the Rasputin Music and Amoeba Music stores in Berkeley. You can go to Tower and get a CD for 29.99 or go to Amoeba(that has a HUGE selection) and get it for 7.99

This reminds me of something I read yesterday:

My personal feeling is fuck downloads.I like the physical object-the connection between the music & the images/words/art that come along with it.The stacks of vinyl & CDs in my home are what gave me a constant connection to the art path through life.A computer can't give you that.

Though its great to have advancements in technology, u know at some point that someone is going to hack into iTunes and get a virus in there and then people who 100% download music will lose their whole collection in one shot, because some computer geek thought it would be funny. Well just imagine losing 10,000 songs you downloaded and not having the cds to back it up, but of course you paid for it.

Of course, you can back up your purchases from the iTunes Store. There's even an automated process that does it.

Once again, iPod != iTunes. Most iPod owners buy CDs.

I found the employees to be bitchy. Thier merch over priced. And catering to a mostly mainstream crowd. Not sorry to see them go. But then again I have the best store available to me, Amoeba. A big store with a local feel to it.

If Virgin would fall the same fate, I wouldn't mind either. It would mean I'd have to go further for music, but I don't mind.

Well I notice that Little Rock never has a Tower Records or VMS.

Now back in New Orleans, both stores existed. VMS never reopen or remodel since Hurricane Katrina, a damn shame because it was the better record store of the two, IMO. VMS had a lot of imports!

Tower Records is still open. But it's hard to tell if the place stays open after the Holidays.

Unfortunately, not everyone lives near an Amoeba Records, or anything remotely similar. neutral

Oh, that's terrible....Well, go buy me some stuff and I'll pay you back. You know what I like! The Tower here in Ann Arbor was awesome but went out of business and I don't think was ever replaced with anything. Sad.

I was on Ebay and noticed Amoeba had a CD I wanted (Kelis "Kaledioscope") and I bought it from there just because I knew the name (the price was right, too).

Yeah, it's sad to hear.

I went into the Tower Records at the Trump Tower on Fifth Ave. and everything was marked down 30%. They were an institution for so long. I'd hate to see the Tower Sunset location go, it's so iconic in L.A. and overall pop music history.

GOOD!!!!!

Yeah, it's really good when one of the last premuim music stores in America goes out of buiness. I'm not saying you have to shop there all the time, but it's always nice to know it's there so you can pick up the stuff that Best Buy doesn't carry, for find interesting stuff. But there's always Wal-Mart....

You can find stuff on the internet.

I think that was mentioned in another thread by LastDecemeber, how the next is kind of killing Mom and Pop and even these chains. Plus, it's not the same thrill as finding it in a store, you know. Even ordering it in a store and picking it up there. That being said, I've been going nuts with Internet music purchases. Just bought a bunch of PSB singles thorugh HMV. Hopefully they will count on their charts (not that I bought them for that reason, but that is the reason I bought them sooner and it would be nice).
