i'm a little late to them also. i started getting into them when a friend of mine got this album for me and i really liked it. i kinda got a 'doors' vibe from this one. i dont think this is the one to start with however maybe siberia or heaven up here- i have not heard these in their entirety so i cant say.

flowers is the one i started with.

Moonbeam, hipped me to them and a 12-inch called "Never Stop." Cool tune.

Quite simply and truly, they are the greatest band in the world ever. The best haircut, voice, attitude - Christ, four dudes embodying all which can be perceived as hip while still retaining a sense of wonder at the obvious magic surrounding us all. The first four albums are a pack of cards with the peak being 1984's Ocean Rain - the Hearts of the deck, the most darkly romantic album I've ever heard, sexy with a Sinatra swagger. They make U2 look like the stumbling dullards they are. Any questions or requests, ornote me. wink

I agree in that saying you like "Lips Like Sugar" is like saying you like Prince's "Cream"--cool song, but the earlier material is much better. 'Ocean Rain' was recently remastered with bonus tracks. I've been meaning to get that one myself.

Or if you're a "hits" kinda guy, then pick up their U.K best of which is solid from start to finish:

This is seriously one of the coolest songs in history...

The Killing Moon

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

La la la la la...

This one too is infectious...and both are from "Ocean Rain" (the album 23 and sextonseven were talking about)

Seven Seas

Stab a sorry heart
With your favourite finger
Paint the whole world blue
And stop your tears from stinging
Hear the cavemen singing
Good news they're bringing

Seven seas
Swimming them so well
Glad to see
My face among them
Kissing the tortoise shell

A longing for
Some fresher feeling
Belonging
Or just forever kneeling
Where is the sense in stealing
Without the grace to be it

Seven seas
Swimming them so well
Glad to see
My face among them
Kissing the tortoise shell

Burning my bridges
And smashing my mirrors
Turning to see if you're cowardly
Burning the witches with mother religious
You'll strike the matches and shower me
In water games
Washing the rocks below
Taught and tamed
In time with tear flow

Seven seas
Swimming them so well
Glad to see
My face among them
Kissing the tortoise shell

Seven seas
Swimming them so well
Glad to see
My face among them
Kissing the tortoise

Seven seas
Swimming them so well
Glad to see
My face among them
Kissing the tortoise shell

That's a fine song for sure, but I've always thought it failed badly on that 'cavemen singing' line.

I've always thought Porcupine was the finer album. I realize that's a minority opinion, but I'll take the opening one-two of The Cutter and Back of Love over anything you could care to name on Ocean Rain.

I saw them live about three years ago, and oddly enough they were absolutely brilliant - tons of fog and dense, slashing guitars. Ian M was sounding a little ragged, but time and a million cigarettes will do that, I guess.

"The Cutter" is a great song. How is Ian looking these days? He always had such a beautiful, boyish quality...but, I always thought (and I told sextonseven this) that if Echo ever made a bio pic Matthew Broderick would be a perfect Ian McCollough. lol
