Music that makes you nostalgic

What music makes you nostalgic? What music brings you back to a certain time and place in your life that may be forever lost?

For some reason, early R.E.M. does this for me. I was more of a subconscious fan when this music came out, but when I hear it now, I become extremely nostalgic. It almost gets painful. Other bands I listened to at the time, the Cure, the Smiths, Led Zeppelin don't have the same nostalgic intensity for me. Talking Heads comes close, but I don't know what it is about early R.E.M. It just gets me, right here heart

The Lonely Shepherd by Gheorghe Zamfir ...Composed by James Last

If there's a song that means a lot to me, this is the one.

It reminds of my childhood and all the stuff I had to survive when I was a kind in the Azores...I cry everytime I listen to it

For those who don't know this song, listen to it here:

(It's also featured on the Kill Bill soundtrack

It happened again today. Don't Go Back To Rockville came on at work and I became wistful, like about to cry or something.

For me, It could be so many different things...I dunno, it's a lot different now, but growing up in the late 60's/ early 70's, so much was in the air, and many different things will trigger that wistful effect, those memories of a certain age...

It might be the final movement of Aaron Copland's "Appalachian Spring", or Rufus and Chaka Khan's "Pack'd My Bags"!

some other things that could set me off:

Maurice Ravel : Menuet

Buddy Miles: Down By The River

Curtis Mayfield : Think

Three Dog Night: In The Country

Tower Of Power: Love's Been Gone So Long

Jackson 5: Darling Dear

Jeff Beck: Diamond Dust

Issac Hayes: Bumpy's Lament (Shaft Soundtrack)

Ennio Morricone: The Carriage Of The Spirits

Rufus/Chaka Khan: Please Pardon Me

Elton John: Your Song

Dionne Warwick: Paper Mache'

Fifth Dimension: One Less Bell To Answer

Godspell Soundtrack: On The Willows

Isley Brothers: Lover's Eve

Rotary Connection: This Town

Marvin Gaye: What's Happening, Brother

Stevie Wonder: Golden Lady

Donny Hathaway: I Love The Lord/ Someday We'll All Be Free

Freddie Hubbard: Little Sunflower

woot!

That WHOLE soundtrack is a RARE moment. Folks don't understand this, there's a whole more life in Isaac's compositions than the overrated Shaft theme.

Ellie's Love Theme is my fave cut in there,,,so tasty music

I read that some critics slammed this as a "lounge music", ain't this a killer? disbelief lol

Music from the awesome summer of 1981. That was one of the best times of my life, and the songs from that period were incredible.

I wonder if those critics would say the same thing about Henry Mancini or a Burt Bacharach score....

People forget that He and Barry White weren't just guys with smooth deep voices...they were musicians, writers, composers, arrangers and producers! for band and orchestra! I guess a lot of people nowadays would just dismiss Isaac as "that guy who did Chef's voice"....

Yeah, it bothers me about Barry White too. Folks will tell you all about "My first, my last, my everything" but will gauke at you if you mentioned his Love Unlimited orchestra sessions.

Love Unlimited is the reason why I'm such a fan of Barry.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. nod For me, it's about a very specific and exciting time in my life, and a group of people who I have lost touch with.

Anything by Earth,Wind & Fire. I like 'em, but I'm not a huge EWF fan. However, any time I hear them I am immediately transformed back to my junior high years when times were much simpler.
