it's not just you, but new schoolers like Mos Def and Talib Kweli are just as good too.

Well...I think Mos and Talieb are just as good and even a little better than many as MCs but as performers, not so much. For instance, the first year when they honored Big Daddy Kane - he came out and did that little flip/split move he used to do off other dude's shoulder. Now I know Kane HAS to be at least 40 something. I couldn't imagine Mos Def or Nas doing that. They are low-energy "listen-to-me" MCs rather than dancer/rappers. I will admit that Nelly surprised me when he did that LL tribute the first year. Its funny how Nelly seems to have moments of greatness. He has demonstrated than he CAN be better than he IS. Dude needs to focus.
Rakim rocked the house. I forgot to mention that earlier. biggrin

i get what you are saying. Big Daddy Kane's performance from last year still gets me excited!

maybe one year they will honor Hammer and he will get all 40 dancers back on stage again for a revap production... lol

In UK, vh1 dont really play hiphop. Our hiphop channel is called mtv base, isn't the US called mtv2? Mtv2 over here is the rock channel. Strange.

oooh i remember mtv base! is trevor still on there as a host?

MissFee's personal recap biggrin

Beastie Boys:

Is it me or was Diddy the absolute worst tribute artist compared to Fabolous and Q-tip - who absolutly killed it last night!!!

Overall the Beastie Boys still have it, but i never was a great fan of theirs.

MC Lyte's:

She is so pretty!!! I think her tribute performance was a very good one with Brat, Remi, and Kim. I was pleased at least and then of course Lyte ripped it at the end!!! thumbs up!

Eazy E:

I liked his tribute performance as well. Thugs Bone N Harmony's performance brought back a lot of memories. "Tha Crossroads" use to be one of my favorite songs.

Lil Eazy E did great too. He eerily sounded similar to his father, but his voice is a bit deeper. I thought his performance was cute. smile

Russell Simmons:

Well that part was okay, but I was still feenin' to see Wu Tang's tribute.

Afrika Bambaataa (i think i spelled it wrong confused ):

His tribute performance was good. While everybody was cheering for Erykah Badu and George Clinton, I was excited to see Bootsy on the guitar.

Rakim:

OH MY GOD!!! RAKIM IS SO SEXY!!! That voice, that flow, on my goodness, he just ripped it last night. The old and the new song, he still got it. That man is just pure genius. Rakim will always be a legend. He had me all excited

Ice Cube:

You know i've always loved Cube, movies and music...but with his music I loved his early stuff better than the stuff he is putting out now. He just had more of a hunger in his voice, and plus he was more angry, that's what I always loved about him. Instead of getting the other artists to do his older songs, he should have just done those instead of those awful songs he has out now. But that's just me. Still got love for Cube.

Wu Tang Clan:

First of all, I waited all night long just to see the Wu. I couldn't wait. Then when they finally got on stage, they cut their performance short!!!!! I was like omfg what the hell????!!! I was yelling "Ice-T you better back up and let my boys finish"!! It wasn't fair, everybody else had ample personal performance time, and Wu Tang had to cut their's short??? I was highly disappointed. I was glad I did see those who showed up (where the hell was Ghostface at????) to perform. It was good seeing Method Man, Inspektah Deck, Masta Killa, Cappadonna, RZA, GZA, U-God, and Raekwon tear it up. Wish O.D.B. was still alive to rip it, but they got Lil Jon to do his line in the tribute part....he was energetic and all, but Lil Jon is still no O.D.B.

Extras:

Umm don't they think they should go ahead and honor Common instead of asking him a billion and one times to be there for somebody else??? Same goes for The Roots as well.

Diddy is not needed for another tribute.

Talib Kweli and Black Thought never fail to amaze me with their flows and performances. But why not invite Mos Def too???

Even though she killed it on her tribute performance to MC Lyte, Lil Kim should know that, that outfit she had on made he look even heavier than the extra pounds she gained in the lock up.

Though the show this year was decent, and as much as I love Rakim and The Wu Tang Clan, their performances still didn't top Big Daddy Kane's performance last year. nod

My predictions/suggestions for next year's Honorees:

EPMD
GangStarr
Queen Latifah
Common
The Roots
A Tribe Called Quest
Leaders of the New School
Dr. Dre
Hammer (maybe??? lol )

word em up yo! i liked the beastie boy's a lot, as well as mc lyte. now i seriously need to get her cd! lil kim rocked it and yes she looked heavier but that is the most dressed up i've ever seen her! i liked her outfit actually. i liked Remi's too! her door knockers were no joke! i've been rocking mine lately but they're not as big as hers.

i agree that nothing topped my man Kane's performance last year. here are my votes for next year..

EPMD
Kool Moe Dee
Hammer
JJ Fad
Roxanne Shante
Vanilla Ice lol

Of course seeing Rakim take the stage was my highlight. The Godfather.

Word 2 what BlaqueKnight said about Kane. I just watched that Kane tribute again, via YouTube. From the way he spoke before the performance, I wasn't sure Kane could still rock the House... and he most definately did. The fact that he and Scoob & Scrap did the steps was just icing on the cake. That was my era in Hip-Hop. I was all about Kane and Rakim. Kane should be the 1st thing mentioned if Wikipedia had a definition of The Battle Rhyme. 4 that matter, the word "Rhyme" itself should mention Kane, 'cause he could rhyme an entire verse, line 4 line, like noone in Hip-Hop history, past or present.

I'm a say... Peace.

bow Big Daddy Kane last year, I haven't seen anything in Hip Hop to top that performance. I used to luv his chocolate ass back in the day.

Last years show had more energy than this years IMHO. I was ready for Ice Cube to bring it, but I was slightly disappointed. Good 2 C Mc Lyte. Lil Kim does appear to have gained weight. But she's only 4'11, so even if she only gained a few pounds it will show.

Overall, I thought that it was cool, but not as good as last year's, which was a classic. That's not good because this year's group of honorees should have made for the best hip hop tribute ever.

I enjoyed the Beasties, but I thought that they did too many Def Jam songs. I didn't care for their tribute- I would have preferred for them to rock all of their songs by themselves. I was VERY thankful, however, for the last verse of "The New Style". The King Ad-Rock is still the goddamn man!

The Ice Cube and Eazy tributes could've been better. I would've preferred for WC to have done "Bow Down" with Cube instead of "It Was A Good Day". Why wasn't Dr. Dre interviewed, along with the rest of NWA, for the Eazy segment? Cube should have came out and rocked "Boyz In The Hood", since he wrote it. However, the Bone Thugs song was great and one of the best moments of the night, even if Bizzy was absent.

I've read that the Wu piece got messed up due to a scuffle with security midway during the evening that resulted in some Wu members leaving the building before their tribute.

I was disappointed with the Russell Simmons tribute. Where were any of the Def Jam artists? They were in New York so I expected more than Kid Capri spinning a few bars of Def Jam classics.

Like I said, I enjoyed it, but I expected more. Still, it made for a good evening of television last night.

By the way, EPMD was honored last year.

I agree with everyone on Diddys piss poor performance. If that didn't prove that Diddy is no emcee, I don't know what will. I think it would be funny to bring out some of the wack rappers just to get the audience's reaction. Have The 69 Boyz, MC Snow, Vanilla Ice And Hammer all in a row. lol

I think even the most clueless hip-hop fans know that Diddy is a wack emcee. I even think Diddy knows that himself, but he has to keep his name in the news. I remember on one of the hip-hop specials where they said that Diddy never intended to become a rapper, but that he was talked into it by Biggie Smalls, and he was stuck into having to carry his own label after Biggie was killed. Why do you think that Diddy honored Russell Simmons instead of one of the actual MC's? He wanted to be a music mogul all along.

I agree with you. However, If Diddy has to make records in order to keep Bad Boy afloat, Maybe it's time for him to close it down, Or sell it. Maybe let someone with a fresh vision run it. Just a thought.

something tells me Queen Latifah will get honored before Roxanne Shante...not to take anything from La...Sparky D. I don't think will ever get honored...they don't seem to be delving way back in to the earlier pioneers that much they seem to be honoring more golden era hip hop artists(88-91) which is cool, however then some real keys players seem to get overlooked. Some ladies I would like to see get honored but I highly doubt they would are Sha Rock,The Mercedes Ladies,The Sequence,Sweet & Sour,Lady B.,Debbie D.,Queen Lisa Lee,Pebblee Pooh,Tanya "Sweet T." Winley & Paulett Winley,Wanda Dee,DJ Jazzy Joyce,Roxanne Shante,The Real Roxanne,Sweet Tee...and if any of them do I would be suprised.

Haha that Beastie Boys tribute was wack except for Q-Tip. I guess I was surprised to see Fabolous on stage for that tribute and when "So Watcha Want" turned into Fab's "Breathe" beat.

This was awesome, my favorite was the MC Lyte tribute! excited She's one of the best emcees ever, period, either gender!

Lil Kim looked cool in the windbreaker outfit lol

I think for Ice Cube's performance, his new song was WACK, and showed how weak new rap can be. whofarted

Rakim... nuff said. cool

Wu Tang Clan - that's annoying that Ghostface wasn't there. They couldn't all get together for this??

And I fall in love with Erykah Badu everytime I see her, especially when she is in the b-girl mode.
