Thank god Madonna took the opportunity!!!
Adopting a child is a lifelong commitment and here in the US when you are matched with a child sometimes you get a call and the child is dropped off in an hour! You never meet the birthparents or get a medical history nothing! The people in this country really need to be educated on this subject. It's not really what is perceived to be by the masses. Tom said: Between the timing of it all (with Angelina Jolie doing the same), and the videos of her dancing with the locals (which looked very patronizing IMO), the whole thing does feel very opportunistic. It's one thing for her to pick up a religion or something like that, to fill a void in her life, but adopting a kid is a lifelong commitment. Even if she started the process months ago, that's still a relatively short time to decide to adopt a kid. How much time has she really spent with the father and other relatives to understand the impact this is going to have on them and their kid? I wish 'all' folks would pick up the phone and call their local agencies and find out that it doesn't cost a penny to adopt an African American child here in the United States..or any color for that matter. The STATE you live in also provides medical insurance, a monthly check and a free college education to all children being adopted.
Pick up that phone! The only thing is is that everyone has to go to a few classes, prove they are not insane or abusive and be able to love unconditionally. The children are many but make sure you know what you are getting into with an abused child. The romanticism of it all can be intoxicating. But talk is cheap - pick up that phone! But remember this - when you bring that child home you don't send them back - no matter what - that is where the UNCONDITIONAL LOVE' part comes in! My husband and I began the adoption process many months prior to our trip to Malawi. I did not wish to disclose my intentions to the world prior to the adoption happening as this is a private family matter. After learning that there were over one million orphans in Malawi, it was my wish to open up our home and help one child escape an extreme life of hardship, poverty and in many cases death, as well as expand our family. Nevertheless, we have gone about the adoption procedure according to the law like anyone else who adopts a child. Reports to the contrary are totally inaccurate. The procedure includes an l8 month evaluation period after which time we hope to make this adoption permanent. This was not a decision or commitment that my family or I take lightly. I am overwhelmed and inspired by my trip to Malawi and hope that it helps bring attention to how much more the world needs to do to help the children of Africa. My heartfelt thanks for all the good wishes I have received and I hope the press will allow my family some room for us to experience the joy we feel to have David home.
