their gonna have a bitch session about madonna adopting on Dateline here in a couple minutes!!

(CNN) -- The following is the text of the letter Madonna sent news agencies, titled "An Open Letter from Madonna":

My husband and I began the adoption process many months prior to our trip to Malawi. I did not wish to disclose my intentions to the world prior to the adoption happening as this is a private family matter. After learning that there were over one million orphans in Malawi, it was my wish to open up our home and help one child escape an extreme life of hardship, poverty and in many cases death, as well as expand our family.

Nevertheless, we have gone about the adoption procedure according to the law like anyone else who adopts a child. Reports to the contrary are totally inaccurate. The procedure includes an l8 month evaluation period after which time we hope to make this adoption permanent. This was not a decision or commitment that my family or I take lightly.

I am overwhelmed and inspired by my trip to Malawi and hope that it helps bring attention to how much more the world needs to do to help the children of Africa.

My heartfelt thanks for all the good wishes I have received and I hope the press will allow my family some room for us to experience the joy we feel to have David home.

This is so dishearteneing to think anyone would appose someone helping a child that would otherwise have to struggle thorugh life. Who the fuck cares if it is a celebrity? People are acting as if the fucking anti-christ is trying to adopt a kid (I'll just sit back and watch the comments that say she is ).

I won't be tuning into dateline. I can do without watching a bunch of pointless bickering from hypocritical sick fucks who probably have a lot more skeletons in their closet than madonna has shoes in hers.

i wonder why so many of the american elite adopt from africa or asia as opposed to adopting from agencies that house impoverished american children? i'm not making any statements about madonna or anyone else nor am i suggesting that international children are any less deserving. i'm just wondering why nobody adopts from america.

i wonder if america's convoluted adoption process and crazy court system (which sometimes takes children away from their adoptive parents once the biological parents come forward) has anything to do with it.

I agree. No matter what your view is on Madonna, or her intentions, she is doing a good thing. Same with Angelina. This is not a war on which celebrity can adopt the most kids or publicity stunt. I don't think that either of them, would do that to a child intentionally.

WIth all the bad crap going on in the world, it is disheartening that people (or the media) focus on such things and not on the things that are important. For those of you that want to bash her, take a good look into your own life before you make judgements. Madonna so far has been a great MOM to both her kids and is wanting to share that with another child. If this were Britney, who can't even take care of her own two without scandal, then we might be talking about a different situation.

It is a good question. Many adopt outside of the US because the children are very young, white, and aren't crack babies. I know there is more obviously to it. My step sister adopted a child from Russia, though I don't know the exact reasons other than it's hard to find an infant and that's what she wanted. SHe does live in the sticks of Missouri, so I think race was a factor as well, as folks don't take too kindly to minorities down where she lives.

The news media makes it sound like Madonna is the first person to ever adopt an orphan. It's a very good thing she's doing. But what's the big deal? Why all the hype? I mean it's one thing to report it. But it's been in the news everyday.

i would venture to guess that some of it has to do with protecting their own privacy. aren't the majority of U.S. adoptions open? celebrities are probably not interested in parents and family members tracking them down for family visits.

take a look at the reinvention tour program. there are little hints everywhere...especially with the whole "you only see what you're eyes want to see" page. i mean, the cover has her wearing a mask with a diamond encircled pentagram superimposed. then there's the whole "nothing it what it seems" stuff...and don't forget the lyrics she chooses to quote: "what i want is to live forever. not defined by time and space. it's a lonely place" and the word "place" is colored like fire. mmmhmm...i'm onto her.

The criticism Madonna is getting is so wrong. I don't understand why people think she should pay for the child to live with his family rather than adopting him. If his father did not want him up for adoption, than how could she adopt him? She didn't just kidnap him. She wanted to share her life with this child and why is that so wrong? It's a sad truth but he will have a much better life living with Madonna than remaining in Malawi...Hell, he'll have a better life living with Madonna than living in Ann Arbor and working for a possibly pointless Masters degree...hint, hint Madonna, adopt me next!

Why is it wrong? It takes more than money to raise a child. So you think money and being rich is more important than this child being with his own people? God help you then because all you have to do is look on the television and see the success rate of celebrity marriages and the well-being of their offspring. A large number of them grow up to be drug addicts or have reality shows showing how fucked up they are. Many of them can't stay married more than a few years why? Madonna's intentions may have heart, but if she really wanted to adopt there are a number of children right here in the U.S. who suffer intense poverty and neglect and most of them grow up in foster homes because everybody's running overseas to adopt. The laws have laxed a lot since the 80s and 90s. They also want babies. There are single people adopting and gay couples adopting. The reason celebrities adopt is they throw down a chunk of change to the governments and get the kid. Here they would have to go through a waiting period and the monitoring process and the truth be told, they don't feel they should have to go through all that. They don't want to be inconvenienced. So they find the poorest country they can and do no more than buy the child and justify it with the intense poverty in that country.

Stop blindly accepting what these celebrities say as the truth. Yes, they may mean well in a sense, but they can be very selfish and fail to see the big picture that results from their actions. If Madonna truly cared for the well-being of this child she would pay to keep him with his family. I'm adopted by the way, so I know what this child has to look forward to and all the love and money in the world cannot replace the bond of family.
