Silk covers "Adore"

R&B group Silk has an album of covers coming out next week called Always & Forever, and one of the songs they take on is Prince's Adore. So far, I've only heard a 30-second sample on amazon.com. They also cover Michael Jackson, Al. B Sure and others. The tracklist:

1. There Will Never Be
2. Adore
3. Always & Forever
4. Don't Disturb This Groove
5. Nite And Day
6. Sideshow
7. Lady In My Life
8. A Night To Remember
9. Secret Garden (Sweet Seduction Suite)
10. Two Occasions

Man, this sounds like it was recorded on a $500 budget. Who produced this stuff?

Aside from the utter blasphemy of covering "Adore," they took on some of my absolute all-time favorites here. What the hell is the point?

And for the record, as a longtime Silk fan, I think the song wouldve sounded vocally better if they still had Lil G in the group to sing the lead on the song. cool

I don't care what you haters say, these dudes can SING. once some of you fanatics get over the fact that someone actually covered the "uncovereable" Prince, you have to admit that the vocals are really nice. It does sound a little "underfunded" but I think they did a decent job on it. John-John is a hell of a lead vocalist and seemed to have no problems hitting all those notes Prince does.

Blaque, I heard Silk do the national anthem a capella at Howard's homecoming in 1991. I know they can blow. I think, however, that the emotional attachment that fans (myself included) have to that song causes us to think that any cover version is "blasphemous."

It's a guttural reaction, not necessarily a logical one.

But hey, it's got to be an improvement over Mariah's cover of "The Beautiful Ones."

I know. I know most Prince fans consider "Adore" to be his best ballad and want it to remain untouched but realistically, its not a diss when another artist covers a great song. Its a tribute. People don't usually cover songs that they don't like (unless ordered to by the label). These guys just covered some songs that influenced them.

Agree. They had a cd out a few years ago that is one of the best MASTERED cd's I think I've ever heard. The quality of the cd was unreal. I forgot the name of the disk but it was a masterful mastering job.

Good points, but it's not about the intent of the coverer, it's about the prejudices of the audience that receives the cover. And I admit that prejudice when it comes to a select number of P's songs, "Adore" perhaps being No.1 on the list.

Okay, I just listened to it. It's the kind of cover I hate MOST: Completely pointless. Why try to make an exact note-for-note, ooh-for-ooh, breath-by-breath copy? The song already exists. The only reason I can see for doing a cover version is for putting your own spin on a song you love. This shit is just dumb.

nod That's the other valid criticism.

Remind's me of TLC's If I Was U'r Girlfriend. Why even do a classic song if you don't at least try to do something original with it?

John-John a hell of a lead vocalist? Hilarious hah!
There is no silk without lil g. He virtually carried
silk on all their hits. He should actually do a solo
project.

I gotta agree with The Mistress on this, but then again, I usually do agree with The Mistress...

I despise cover versions that simply imitate the original. U should put your own vibe into a song if, and/or when, U cover something. That is what made so many jazz standards interesting... hearing someone else's RENDITION, via their style and phrasing.

I generally like Silk also, but some of the vocals on that album are flat out terrible. The cover of 'Lady In My Life' stands out....or down as it may be.
