This one is tougher for me since I love all the tracks so much. I'll do it this way- favorite slow song, "Soul Love", favorite fast song "Hang Onto Yourself".

Rock'n'Roll Suicide is my favorite...the whole thing has to be listened to in its entirety, though...there should be a law...and don't make me trundle out that Uptown "Purple Stardust" story again...oh, the skeletons in the closets...oy

Heh, not a lot to tell...I wrote an article for Uptown a couple of years ago comparing "Ziggy Stardust" and "Purple Rain". Probably the most self-indulgent thing I've ever written and seen published, but it was fun to write...ya know, I never DID get to see what the final product looked like.

Oh shit...I remember that! I was so happy to see it done! I'll see if I have it somewhere and if I do, I'll email it to you as a *.pdf file (I've got the "days of wild" Uptown cd)...if you're gonna be self-indulgent, why not revel in it! smile

Even though the anniversary re-issue sounds LEAGUES better, for some reason I can't part with my good ol' Ryko pressing of Ziggy...I guess it's just nostalgia...nothing can top that year when Ryko released all those Bowie albums, with bonus demo tracks and lyric sheets and liner notes with tons of photos, everything documented to the gills. Yum. Sigh. I think one day, when and if all the masters ugliness is put to rest, Prince needs to take a copy of the Sound + Vision box set to Ryko, slam it down on someone's desk, and say "hook me up." When the Prince back catalog gets this kind of loving treatment, damn...I can't even fathom it...

I used to have all of the 1999 Virgin remasters. Unfortunately, I went really broke once and they ended up being the last set of CD's I sold for cash. sad So I don't have any of them anymore. (Though a kind soul of a boyfriend I've got is buying me all the Ryko discs slowly but surely heart ).

Anyway, I prefer the sound of the Ryko discs to the Virgin remasters. The Ryko copies sound so much crisper. I read back when the 99 remasters came out that the reason why the Ryko discs sounded cleaner was because they used earlier generation copies of the albums to remaster and press to CD and the Virgin remasters were later generation. Maybe even done again on top of what Ryko had done to them.

Also, I like that the 99 remasters sound beefed up, but a lot of the time, it seems like they pushed it as far as they could, almost to the brink of distortion. Because they definitely are louder...

I do have the Ryko pressing too. In vinyl, the CD-version with bonus and now the new one.

4 2 years ago I bought several bowie albums in vinyl (like the original Space oddity in hard cardboard) 4 1 DM each record. (I guess that is about 40 cents). The records were in best condition.
They didn't knew what they were doin'.
