I don't think people are discussing "the topic" anymore. It's interesting, though.

Way of the Org. See the Macca Wifebeater thread I started. Now become a subthread called "James Brown is crap", started by a Big Pun and Jay Zzzzz fan. lol

if this janet album sounded like "crap"... then i would say it did... I love jaent but if her music, cloths, behavior or anything she does... isnt right... I will call her out on it...

but this album is really great.... and I am giving her credit for it...
Im NOT some kind of psycho fan.. .who thinks janet is perfect and everythign she does is perfect...

I know janet's far from perfect... and what she needs to work on...and I will be happy to talk about negative things about JJ... but not when its NOT true..

I dont believe you guys bought her album... because if you did... she would have sold more albums... so thats enough proff that you guys... Im asuming never listen to the whole album.. and cant not judge its quality

Um, you did know that AOL Music and BET offered previews for the entire cd before the album dropped right? I think a lot of folks, including myself, listened to the preview and was not impressed.

I listened to the CD twice and I was bored.

IT was a prewiew... that means you probably only listen to a song one time...and you dont take the time to really enjoy it..... i think almost everyoen song sounds weird when i first hear it... but thats because it hear it one time... and i wasnt able to fully listen and enjoy it...
but after i hear a song maybe 3 or 4 times... i will know by then if i really like it...

so a preview doesnt really help or do any justices for albums... you have to buy them... and really listen to them...

and please listen to the album again (maybe 2 more times) if you have a chance... and tell me if your changed your mind about it sounding "crappy"...

okay, perhaps you didn't understand my post. I listened to AOL Music preview, when I say preview I don't mean snippets of each song like they do on Amazon. I listened to each song in its entirey and was bored to death the first time. Then, when BET streamed the entire CD on its website, I listened to it again, and I was BORED TO TEARS!

You're telling me, that after listening and getting a headache from total boredom twice, I'm supposed to take my hard-earned money and go by the CD anyway, so that after 3 or 4 more times listening to it, which will make a total of 6 times, I may like it?

Get a grip dude, in my opinion, this CD sucks. If you love it, then I totally respect that. But don't say that people who don't like it didn't listen to it. I listened and I don't like....Sorry shrug

I don't think it sucks: it's just not my favorite Janet cd. To tell you the truth, I really don't like Janet's vocal quality on this particular cd. To me, her voice sounds a bit "shriller" and/or "thinner" than usual on some songs against the "heaviness" of the production. And for that reason, I really have a more difficult time listening to it. That contrast really bothers me--like nails on a chalkboard. A while back someone said that he/she could imagine someone else singing to do the songs more justice. I would have to agree with that. I'm not suggesting Janet's voice is "bad," however. I'm just saying for my taste, the particular production just doesn't compliment her voice. Really many of the songs themselves are great. IMO, I just don't think Janet has the vocal "power" to really get the most of them--not that she needs a belt voice but just stronger and more resonant--a better quality of voice maybe more mature in the upper range for some of the songs. Songs like "Daybreak" and "Enjoy" are fine, but "Love 2 Love,"This Body," "With You" even "Do It To Me"have this "thin" vocal quality never really bothering me before about Janet. I noticed it after the first listen, and I've listened to the cd many more times--that quality--so distinctive in the past--really grates my nerves now. Also, "So Excited" lyrically and musically is just boring--not that it's bad to me. It's just boring to me. COM--I've never liked that song. To me it's sort of cheesy. lol Plus, I'm a little bored with the duets.

Also, it's more of a "chill" cd--which is fine. Other than "So Excited," I really don't think there are a lot of mid to uptemp dance songs.

I've always been a huge Janet fan. I even liked DJ. But for all of these reasons, plus just not appealing to musical taste, 20 Y.O. is only OK for me.

Sorry... sad sad Obviously, all of the above is just my opinion. So many people really love the cd, so I respect that, too. It's really all a matter of taste, and sometimes where a person is at a point in time.

I'm the most "hated"? lol lol How funny. What did I do? eek I'm pretty much under the radar.

It's a bummer...really--because I made some acquaintances believe it or not at some Janet's sites. But I just have a differing opinion about the cd. Well, I'm just not as enthusiastic. Like I said...at these fansites, the artist brings people together, but also apart, too. Oh well.

I do care about Janet's success though.

Lemme break it down 4 y'all..I ain't gonna read this whole thread..

The problem is that'20 copies sold' is really Jermaine's album, but
without actual songs..it sounds like any other random r&b act..
anyone could have done that album..so Janice don't set herself apart
from the pack no more..& obviously people r going 4 the younger versions
that r on the market..

end of story..
...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

Why?? What did you do?? You seem pretty nice.

Is it about Janet discussion and threads? Well yeah.. I've been talking about this project because I was so hyped to be involved in the era particularly after really supporting her through the DJ-post Super Bowl and now.. Well I guess that's not going to happen because I'm only *meh* about the cd.

lol lol

Actually, I'm a former teacher, now a business owner--well a partner.

There is just a lot of mediating that goes-on. And there is a lot of attempting to be tactful--and understanding another person's point-of-view even though I, personally, might not agree.

Plus, I've taken a few law courses as well. I'm pretty good as seeing "both" sides of an argument--even developing both sides of an argument.

the Janet fans have been pretty bad, unless maybe they've gotten a little better or wised up some since i got kicked off the Miss Janet mailing list for daring to contemplate that Janet and Rene were married (before the story broke) and that perhaps she was depressed because things weren't working out between them. or that it's pretty ridiculous to go into depression at 30 because a teacher said you gave her the wrong answer when you were 6 (paraphrasing from the 1997 Oprah interview).

I got kicked off that mailing list in 1998 for daring to suggest that Madonna's Ray of Light was a good album lol

And I hated that example she gave in that Oprah interview. I remember sniggering when she said that.
[Edited 10/23/06 5:31am]

oh yeah, i forgot the part about Madonna that got me kicked off. it was the last straw, as i remember it. People were getting worked up because people were starting to shun janet for her more explicit lyrics/songs after TVR and the Janazis were saying "Madonna gets away with this shit all the time." I dared to point out that Madonna had a severe backlash with Erotica, and that she actually has almost NO songs that are lyrically explicit, while Janet was having orgasms as far back as RN1814, and if anybody had been able to understand the lyrics to "If" it would've been banned from the radio. they really hated that lol

Well exactly. I think the most explicit lyrics on Madonna's Erotica were from 'Where Life Begins' in the form of funny metaphors about "Eating Out" lol A couple of light S&M references in the title track, and nothing else springs to mind. Janet's lyrics are far more sexually charged and she didn't pay for it like Madonna did in the early 90s.

The point is folks, that Janet is 40, and that does not go down well with Radio or Mtv. Lets face it, this industry does not reward longevity, if you want that, only the latin market does that also thats what the UK is for , this is why other american artists do better over there. I think there is this "enigma" that the USA is the only market, no way, there are artists that sell worldwide and dont even get released here, can Lil flip or Lloyd Banks say that? I watched Janet on 106th and Park and it was a joke, heres this 40 year old trying to get 12-16 year olds to buy her record. They dont wanna hear janet, they dont wanna Prince or Lionel, they wanna hear Ciara and Ne-yo, and thats what the industry banks on, and why it loses all the time. Music does not mean what it did way back, I mean you remember where you were when u first heard "When Doves Cry" but do you think in 20 years todays audience is gonna be like "wow i remember when i first heard SexyBack". So im not saying its right the way america thinks, but it is what it is, Age tells the story, i told someone the other day that Amerie turned 29 and they said "wow shes old school" WTF? 29 is old for an artist. Does it suck that Janet cant get MTV or airplay, yeah it does, since she was one of the pioneers of "good" dance videos, but Duran Duran who made Video an art form dont get MTV play, they are left to vh1 at 4am, because thats when we put on the oldtime people. And also whether the album is good or bad has nothing to do with it, the fact is she is aiming at an audience that just aint into her, stop trying to get 12 year olds to buy your records, sell to your loyals do tours, and dont worry about radio and mtv, their day is long over.
