I'm sure he'll be back when the current Janet era is over (which should be next week) and come back to this board to aid lady Jackson from the haters.

What i think is that Janet should go on extended vacation, come back in 5 years and blow us away. The 2 year between albums is bringing back memories of SuperBowl and the controversy behind it...not that she's helping things be appearing half nude on all those magazine covers.

No,a 5-year hiatus would basically kill her career. She wouldn't be able to come back,at age 45 and re-claim her status. She would be forgotten, and losers like Ciara and Cassie would fill the void rolleyes Here's what she should do:

*TOUR---as Madonna proved in 2004,you can still have a hugely successful tour even though your album didn't set the world on fire.Janet should do a retropective-type tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 'Control'.She needs to remind people why they became fans in the first place.Play a few songs from the new album, but mainly focus on the last 20 years. We are currently in an 80s revival anyway.Fans would flock to see her.Spend most of the year (2007) on the road.

*WORK ON A NEW ALBUM---after the tour ends, she should rush back into the studio (late 2007).But don't bring Jam,Lewis and Jermaine Dupri along. It's time to go in a whole new direction.Call up Gorillaz and work on a few dark, edgy songs with them.Record a few rock songs with another producer (Dallas Austin comes to mind).Work with a European producer on some fast, outrageous dance tracks. Most importantly, stay away from bland American R&B.Let Ciara and Ashanti do that boring shit.Another thing: don't make this album strictly about sex! How about some serious, introspective lyrics for a change? I'm not saying she can't have fun,but she should aim for a deeper, more meaningful album this time around.

I really thought she was going to throw back to the 80's, or at least Control. The new track has Rockit sample but there could have been so many fun things to do. She could have sample Control tracks or her favorite tracks from '86. the cd is just boring.

Janet's 20 Y.O. has fallen out of the Top 10 according to HitsDailyDouble.

The album sits at number 12 according to the chart, selling just under 70K in its second week--an astronomical drop from 296K last week.

This is uglier than I thought. What the fuck is going on?

Well at least she's still in the top 20. biggrin

I dunno. I am now even more convinced that Janet was just fulfilling contractual obligations with Virgin. It doesn't really seem that she HERSELF has put much effort into this project. I just don't really think she's as interested anymore. Maybe she's experiencing a burn-out? It happens. JD seemed to be the one who was really more interested. Janet herself has been sort of aloof. I know she has MYSPace and her fan messages--but there is something very distant about Janet.

I thought it was quite odd that she was in Paris the week the numbers came out. It was great for her, but then again it was just weird that she's was in Europe but didn't spend anytime promoting her cd. I don't know if it's a combination of Janet and Virgin--just going through the motions, but all things considered, the cd did pretty WELL actually.

I won't be surprised at all if she doesn't tour. I'd be pleasantly surprised if she DID, however. I'm very disappoint--not so much in the cd, but more in the way Janet herself has just not seemed to really care about it.

Now...do you all really think there is a conspiracy against Janet or do you all think that the industry--radio... of course MTV just isn't too impressed with the cd??? I have mixed views on it, but I was curious as to your objective opinions--even those who aren't so much Janet fans.

I think she would be crazy not to tour. That's the one way she could salvage this flop album. She is still a popular live act.She doesn't necessarily need a "hit" album to sellout an arena.

I'd love to know what she's thinking about all this.

* If she didn't put much effort into the album because she plans on changing labels, surely she'd be wanting to get to the studio ASAP and have another contract waiting in the wings. But she desperately needs a hit to convince anyone to give her a lucrative deal. Maybe she doesn't want a lucrative multi-album deal and wants to play it per-album.

* Is her career her top priority anymore? She doesn't have kids so can't say she wants time off to spend with her family. Or maybe she wants to start one with JD.

* Is it the norm these days to go on a promo campaign lasting a few weeks and then give up as soon as the album is released? The second video has already been made - and Damita Jo only had 2 singles [and 3 videos] so we don't even know if Virgin are currently willing to risk making more.

* She may be in Paris for Fashion Week as a break, but why not go and promote in Europe? She's sitting at #78 in the UK album chart right now and isn't doing that much better in the other major European markets. Is it even worth it?

I love her LPs, including the new one, I hope she continues to make albums but I just wish she would do well at SOMETHING ever since the Super Bowl shit hit the fan. And I would rather see her onstage than anyplace else. I really thought this record had strong potential to be a smash..."So Excited" and "Do it 2 Me" I thought would be undeniable hits. I also think "With U" is a slam dunk for urban radio...

But you know Virgin will probably abandon this album faster than Damita Jo with these awful numbers.

I'd like to think they kill try to comeback with a new single soon or maybe even early next year when nothing is going on, and try to breathe new light into the album! But I doubt it...

lol I wonder what movie it will be for this time.

Honestly, I don't think she alienated urban fans. I don't think she alienated pop fans. I think she alienated fans, period. If you like Janet, you like her regardless if it has a pop edge or an urban edge (God, I hate that term). Not like she was the epitome of one either way.

I don't know what they expected when:
1) she's 40 in an age discriminate industry competing with twenty-somethings
2) has a major media outlet against her
3) released a mediocre album that only a die-hard could love
4) refuses to answer 50% of the questions asked and the other 50% center around sex and weight loss and sex
5) publicize that the album is A, B and C when in actuality its X,Y and Z
6) coming off the heels of Nipplegate and DJ

Yes! that's exactly what I had expected. I thought she was even going to use her usual interludes to stream in some Control songs, but the interludes were stupid. I can't even remember what the interludes were about? what was she thinking?

Yes...I agree. As a fan, I was HOPING that the PR from Janet's end would have been handled a bit better. In regard to the music, I'm very idealistic and forgiving when it comes to "art." I just think the art speaks for itself--and if people buy it fine, if they don't fine, too. One person's trash is another's treasure.

However, I definitely agree that from what I've read and observed, a number of people just are over Janet as a "persona." I've been critical of certain aspects myself. I've read more personal criticisms about her image and personality than anything else, really. And to the extent 20 Y.O. reflects and reinforces that image, well then the general public is critical in the same way , too.

I dunno... It's certainly going to be interesting to see what the future holds.

True, that. But the album's artless. 2 good songs (that's good not great) out of 20 crap ones = piss poor album. No amount of positive PR could salvage that stinker.

Janet will bugger off off the face of the planet tomorrow, eat three supersize squares a day at KFC, be photographed waddling out of her SUV with sunglasses and a baseball cap on, then, when it's time to release a new album on a new label, she'll lose it all again by going on a strict diet of one beansprout and a spoonful of water a day ... Oh, whoops now! That was THIS time! lol

yeah, she had alot of things working against her.But I still think she could have prevented this fiasco if she had made a stunning,career-defining album that took her in a whole new direction.Great music always finds an audience. After the SuperBowl fiasco, she really needed to change the subject and make people focus on her ART instead of her boobs.Alas, she has failed to do this and is now paying a huge price.

I believe so too and thought there was a possibility but I realized years ago that Janet is not an artist. Her body is about as close to her true artistic expression as we'll ever get. Hmm, maybe that's why it overshadows her music now. And yet, even her bod is somewhat manipulated by outside forces.
