Glad you posted this because there seems to be more of a reflection on the anniversary of the day he was killed then on the day that he was born.

why is he considered a musicl genius even though his solo stuff is so weak? his only consistent good materil was when he worked with his band.

Your focusing on something specific.. to be honest, i believe he is measured for his musical contributions as a whole.. and when you look at it from a distance, he was a genius.

besides.. he had a successful solo career.. yes, a good portion of it was junk, but he didn't plan his life the way it ended.. he would have continued to make great music..

who knows what he would have done had he not been shot. all i can go by is his living record and that record shows a much stronger artistry during the latter half of the 6 commercial years of the beatles than the ten years of his entire solo career.

but, hey, genius is usually subjective.

Record? Who's record would that be?
And even so, yes, musical taste and appreciation IS subjective.

John Lennon RIP pray

hey, i'm not out to insult anyone's taste. i like john lennon a little, i just never got the whole genius thing. sometimes he wrote good songs, other times he didn't. i'm not aware of any particular genius musicianship or overall songwriting genius, but that's me. i think he worked very well with three...well, ok...two other guys and they clicked to make great music. as solo artists, however, i think all members of the group released mostly mediocre work. to me that speaks of the level of genius held by all four members of the group.

the biggest genius of the beatles, in my opinion, is their marketing.

True but the bar is raised so high when comparing those last years of the beatles. I mean from Rubber Soul-Abbey Road i dont think anyone can compare in terms of artistic growth in that small a time frame. I mean just think John did things like Nowhere Man at the same age that Justin graced us with "SexyBack". Also anything the Beatles would do solo would pale in comparison, I look at it like that with any great group, it is very rare to outdo it, and why would you wanna outdo your own stuff, its like having a child and then saying i want a better one this ones not good enough. So when, to us, we look at Double Fantasy and say thats crap compared to Abbey Road, maybe to us, but to John it was his best statement at that time. I do sometimes think where he would be, what would he do, any we can speculate on that for days, but at the same time, many things that happend after that would never had happend, alot of people who got into Lennon, sadly got into him after death, rediscovering his work.

True and we also have to realize that "junk" is measured in our eyes. As Michael Stipe said about REM's latest CD "around the sun" when asked. "whats your best album?" and he said "this one, thats why i made it now".

you have a very valid point. i'm just amazed at how much i like those later beatles records and how little i like the vast majority of their solo works. it's like it's not even the same people.

Just love Dr. Winston 'O' Boogie.

I don't mind people saying his solo-stuff is weak, I just strongly dissagree with them.

Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Walls and Bridges are really great albums!!!
The only album that you really can call a weak album is Sometime in NY city.

As for Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey. I don't care much off the Yoko tracks, but the John tracks are mostly really good. Watching the Wheels is one of my all time favorite Lennon tracks!

Hope you're having fun John somewhere out there ...

I have tickets for Sean Lennon next month (stop laughing! He just released his third solo album and he has Lennon blood within him so I go support the man cool )

I feel JL was alot of differnt things to people. First when the beatles 1st came to the US and the mass hysteria that followed it, (nothing to this day has EVER matched it) The songwriting of that era..nothing harmful or offensive...the genuis of lennon really came about when sgt peppers came out..i mean to go from "love me do" to "a day in a life" ..just the whole vibe of that album changed music forever. Remeber the beatles did not have mtv, the internet, tv shows to get their music out there

You may not think of him as a musical genius, but he was an oustanding human being...where do you see today some of JL's stature promoting peace and love for the world??? His artwork is something amazing to see, if you get the chance please do so...his commitment to his son and how much he loved him and giving up music to raise him.

His solo stuff is personal to him, its not the beatles but it sure as hell is the shit music out there were the most popular seems to be hip hop which promotes violence, sex, and degrades women. Funny how most rappers today all carry guns to promote an image and show how "street" they are and John Lennon was gunned down for no reason whatsoever.

Please look at the man as he was and not at his solo music to judge was he a genius or not. He has touched many lives for many differnt reasons and you cant say that of people in music today.

my doctor may be an outstanding human being but i go to him because of his skills. nobody refers to john lennon as genius because of his personality traits, they are referencing his work.

untrue. some of his solo material is simply amazing, and in fact his first solo album - Plastic Ono Band - is frequently placed by critics right alongside the best of the Beatles' work.

Yes & No, Lennon, to understand why he was such a great person, you have to understand what went on in the 60's and the 70's
Lennon's greatest side was his political side...
Lennon was a child of Ken Kessey and the Pranksters...
he was the follower of that strange sense of esoteric knowledge that erupted in the 60's and tragically died in the 70's
in the league of Timothy Leary, Hunter S. thompson, Kesey, Keruoac, Cassady...
Lennon like all of them represented a sense of freedom, in the world...
and deep down everyone knows that... thats why it hurts so bad the way he died... at the hands of a J.D. Salinger weilding beatles fann.
I remember my father once told me that the Day John Lennon Died, was the day Freedom Officially failed, it was a world a reganomics and corporate takeover
the high crest that the 60's began was officially over...
and 26 years later...
it still hurts

that's a bit much. he was rock n'roll star, not some diety. and i recognize many people still mourn his work/social commentary but that doesn't change my opinion that he's overrated. and that's not to say he wasn't very talented, i just think people give him too much credit.

John Lennon solo is better then Wings. Not that iam a big fan of either, but damn, Wings had 0 balls LOL. That would be fine if the music was good, but meh, i'd take the awesome "jealous guy" or "mind games" over "band on the run" anyday
