I have been saying this for a long time of how Christina,Beyonce,Jessica all have great voices but dont know how to properly sing and use the voice. Thats not saying they are bad because they are not, they are great, but having a strong voice dont mean shit if you dont know how to use it properly. On that note though Babs needs to stop this retiring and Final tour stuff every 5-10 years and then charging people thousands for tickets, talk about putting people off.

Beyonce does sort of scream sing on some but when she does SING on this album she makes a point. For ex. "Irreplaceable" & "Listen" & "Resentment" are beautiful singing. Seems she's experimenting with her voice and music, esp. with the funk and rock. Now, Christina Aguillera sounds extremely good with rock. The song 'Fighter' on STRIPPED is my favorite!!

But, I'm also a fan of loud mouthed, boisterous singers. Singers like Patti Labelle are the end all be all for me. However, what the masters like LAbelle and Streisand can teach some of these young whippersnapper gals is the use of DYNAMICS. That's really what's missing for me with todays younger singers; they've got melissma down pat but cannot employ the use of dynamics to save their lives. And I understand their plight; when I have the chance to sing, I too tend to be a screamer and have found out is that once you get up there it's SOOOOO HARD reign it in and bring it back home, which is why I respect the old skoolers even more!They can take you around the bend, bring you back, AND hold notes for 20 seconds if they so choose!!!

...has anyone here, by the way, seen the video of Babs at about 22 years old singing a jazzy version of "When The Sun Comes Out"? Grandmaw KILLS on that tune

That doesn't really work well for pop music though, where the voice needs to convey an emotion and style first, rather than be pitch perfect and controlled and overly mannered.

I have a friend who thinks that Babs is a screamer! He thinks that she started the whole screaming trend or something!!!!!

Babs is one of the original pop music screamers . After age 40 or so she calmed down considerably though. I still love all of her pre 35-ish performances where she belted her guts out and could hold notes FOREVER. Her Star Is Born era was GREAT for that! But hey, it was the 70's, a time for excess in everything I guess

My co-worker was so disappointed in his father - he paid $1300 for a pair of tickets to see that old yenta perform. THIRTEEN-HUNDRED F-N DOLLARS!!!!! OMFG!! I wouldn't pay that to see anybody, even Prince. Babs should be ashamed of herself, charging all that loot so she can assault people's ears with horrible music and her 'limousine liberal' politics.
