Often I wander until I'm reminded of something I thought I'd forgotten.

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...?
In this case, I will distract myself away & buy something else. If I have doubts in front of temptation.

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you)
Yes.

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of.
Mr. Tube & the Flying Objects - Listen Up.
"I got the devil in me, girl." - 'John the Baptist', Afghan Whigs
"Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself."

1. what's your favourite music (cd/record) shop? Into the Music (local 2nd hand/indie shop)

2. if different; which store do you buy most of your music?

3. what section do you browse 1st? (i.e. new releases, jazz, pop, etc..)New arrivals

4. what was the last album you bought? Bought three today:

Plastikman - Artifakts
Plastikman - Sheet One
the dB's - Like This

5. what's the most amount of money you've spent on a purchase? $60.00

6. do you return music at all? (not including defectives) No

7. how long do you or can you spend in a music store? I usually don't browse for more than 20 minutes or so, but if I have no place to go and nothing pressing I can whittle away an hour or two quite easily.

8. do you have a 'midnight madness' sale (new releases sold the night prior) in your area; and how often do you go? Not that I'm aware of, and I wouldn't go if such a thing was held.

9. do you always buy a new release you've been waiting for on the day of? No, I rarely shop during the week. I usually drop by the shops on Friday after work.

10. do you buy music online: never? once in a while? always/only? if i have to? Very rarely - only if it's either considerably cheaper or unattainable otherwise. If I'm looking for a rarity, I'll usually order it from the local indie shop - their prices are usually competitive and I like supporting them.

11. do you think these stores will eventually become extinct due to downloading? I would expect 2nd hand stores to continue to exist (though perhaps not flourish) for years to come, but the new music store dedicated solely to music definitely would seem to be on the way out.

12. what's the most annoying thing for you when you walk into a music store? Hipsters trying to impress the clerks by talking very loudly about Swell Maps reissues.

13. what's your favourite thing about walking into a music store? The hope that I'll stumble across a great find, which happens more often than not.

14. do you keep the sleeves and cases to your cds or do you just keep the disc? I keep the entire package intact.

15. not including online: how easy/hard is it for you to find imports in your area? I rarely seek out imports, but when I do look for them I haven't found them hard to come by.

16. have you ever, or do you now, work in a record store? which one(s)? No, but I still have the fantasy of having a hot record-store-clerk girlfriend.

17. do you buy singles at all? Not for anything current, but I used to collect 45s, and will still pick a batch here or there at rummage sales or wherever.

18. besides price and favourite artist, what prompts you most to buy a cd at that very moment? I usually browse through the 2nd hand bins looking for a find. If I find something that has a good reputation but that I otherwise know nothing of, I'll pick it up. I almost never shop for anything specific unless I know something's come out that I need.

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...? It was nonexistent at one point in my life, but I keep my spending on music on a fairly tight leash these days (by my standards, anyway).

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you) Yes, though it hasn't happened that often. I picked up a Raspberries compilation a little while ago that was playing, and a few years back I picked up an album of didgeridoo playing that sounded incredibly good coming over the store's sound system.

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of. Gene Clark's No Other is one of my favourite unappreciated classics.

1. what's your favourite music (cd/record) shop?

www.demonfuzz.com/diggin.htm

www.demonfuzz.com/store.htm

( This one below is around my corner .)

2. if different; which store do you buy most of your music?

Randomly from all above .

3. what section do you browse 1st? (i.e. new releases, jazz, pop, etc..)

I shuffL from funk 2 jazz 2 latin 2 soul 2 music-dvd's and back .

4. what was the last album you bought?

Incredible hard2find funk-EP , recorded by Eugene Wilde's family and released in 1982 .

5. what's the most amount of money you've spent on a purchase?

300

2 other & rare 1982-productions :

- The group above is from North Carolina , and the album includes "Here A Funk , There A Funk , Everywhere A Funk Funk" .

- Below a group from Maryland ... album includes the track "Universal Funk Affair" .

6. do you return music at all? (not including defectives)

Nope , been satisfied evrytyme so far .

7. how long do you or can you spend in a music store?

The one around my corner ( which i pointed above ) i usually visit on saturday-mornings .
Along with a coffee , i dig for some import-cd's or rare cd's which i've ordered .
The RAF-personal is cool and we can chat about all kinda jams when i'm there .

There's also a specialised soul/funk-shop in my town called Backbeat , which i haven't visited for a while ,
but where i sometimes wandered around during saturday-mornings with a coffee and had lots of fun .
The store-owner is a professional drummer and a cool dude .

When there are record-fairs though , especially the 2-yearly returning ones which last a complete weekend ,
then i'm there both full days ... not only digging the crates , but also meeting other collectors and having fun .
It's a great fair where you can have a good lunch inbetween and a beer later in the day .
And above all , it's where the ultra-rare vinyl pops up from the more specialized sellers .

8. do you have a 'midnight madness' sale (new releases sold the night prior) in your area; and how often do you go?

No , but i have a custom-card from a cd-shop called Fame , and they have sometimes exclusive sale/discount-evenings for their registered customers .

9. do you always buy a new release you've been waiting for on the day of?

Only from a few fave artists .

10. do you buy music online: never? once in a while? always/only? if i have to?

Lately i buy more online than 5 years ago .
2003 was my 1rst rediculous year on eBay .
Outside internet , i occasionally visit the mentioned stores and when there's the 2-yearly expanded Record-fair .

11. do you think these stores will eventually become extinct due to downloading?

It might become a lil' less , but i guess that they will last as long as there are still peeps around who will keep on liking to visit stores in their town .

12. what's the most annoying thing for you when you walk into a music store?

Not anything i can directly think of ... when i see those crates of black gold , i'm all focussed and can't really be bothered with any possible disturbing elements , if there already is one happening .

13. what's your favourite thing about walking into a music store?

Looking 4ward 2 maybe find rare items or new sounds , and when arriving back home ,
to unpack the bags and spinnin' the funkfood on the decks .

If i'm traveling back home in a train or bus while i have visited a recordfair or shop outta town that day ,
i check the sleeves and liner-notes while consuming a beer .

14. do you keep the sleeves and cases to your cds or do you just keep the disc?

I always like the idea of a complete product . If a plastic case breaks , i'll change it .
Also really dig the cardboard digi-packs , which sometimes look like a mini vinyl-record .

15. not including online: how easy/hard is it for you to find imports in your area?

The shop around my corner has very good CD-import distribution references , including www.cdbaby.com , another fave online-seller for independent new releases and which i forgot to mention .

Some vinyl-shops in my town have any now & then a few cool items , but the real hard deal i mostly find online .
When it comes to discovering very independent & unknown funk/soul-releases from the 70's + 80's , then eBay is 1 of the interesting sources .
There's where i really discover artists i had never ever heard of or seen coversleeves from before .

16. have you ever, or do you now, work in a record store? which one(s)?

Nope .

17. do you buy singles at all?

Yes , because sometimes , copies include different or better mixes than the album-version .

18. besides price and favourite artist, what prompts you most to buy a cd at that very moment?

There have to be a those few sparkling moments while i'm checking/listening an album or a pile of singles in the shop .

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...?

Depends ,

- If it's pricey and not rare , i'll wait for it sometime later .

- If it's pricey and rare or almost out-of-print , i sometimes check first online how difficult it might be to find another copy and depending on that , i'll make my decision ... on a record-fair though it's a different story .

- If it doesn't have that much songs i dig , then i'll hire it at a specialized cd-rental in my town or borrow it from a friend and copy my fave tracks on a cd-r .

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you)

Yeah , i'm always open for new stuff .
The shop around my corner and Backbeat ( uptown ) play various cool joints through the day .
There have been a few occasional times when i bought an album from hearing it in the shop .
Last one i remember was "Roy Hargrove's RH Factor" which the Fame-shop played .

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of .

Keep on diggin' y'all !

There are NO decent record stores where I live, so I pretty much have to buy everything online. I usually use Amazon.com or GEMM.com. I also buy music from record stores in Helsinki (our capital city) and Turku.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

3. what section do you browse 1st? (i.e. new releases, jazz, pop, etc..)

"New Arrivals".. meaning... records we ain't sort yet lol

4. what was the last album you bought?

5. what's the most amount of money you've spent on a purchase?

$125

6. do you return music at all? (not including defectives)

I trade in used copies for credit towards other used items sometimes, yeah.

7. how long do you or can you spend in a music store?

4 hours or before I have to go pee. (haha)

8. do you have a 'midnight madness' sale (new releases sold the night prior) in your area; and how often do you go?

Never been to one, I just make a point of going the day of, like for the new Janet.

9. do you always buy a new release you've been waiting for on the day of?

Absolutely! nod

10. do you buy music online: never? once in a while? always/only? if i have to?

Yeah if I must special order something I do it online now, because at least it will be sent directly to my house, and not to a store where I have to pick it up, but will have to wait just as long.

11. do you think these stores will eventually become extinct due to downloading?

Eventually, yes. All it seems to offer right now is a packaged medium. Eventually, music will just be downloaded to your body and your brain will be stimulated to hear it.

12. what's the most annoying thing for you when you walk into a music store?

hmmm..... the temperature? confused

13. what's your favourite thing about walking into a music store?

the euphoric feeling of possibility eek

14. do you keep the sleeves and cases to your cds or do you just keep the disc?

Everything. If I can, I keep the promotional stickers too.

15. not including online: how easy/hard is it for you to find imports in your area?

So hard. neutral So hard.

16. have you ever, or do you now, work in a record store? which one(s)?

I worked at an HMV once. The loud music actually gets annoying after a while.

17. do you buy singles at all?

Used ones, sure. If it's got a remix or acapella or instrumental I couldn't get with buying the full album.

18. besides price and favourite artist, what prompts you most to buy a cd at that very moment?

session players, personnel, or producers

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...?

hahahaha if I don't have the money, I don't go shopping, because once I find something, my will power to not buy doesn't exist.

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you)

Fer sure. I always ask about what's playing if I don't know it.

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of.

From 1980, contains the mind blowing "Strawberry Rap"

1. what's your favourite music (cd/record) shop?

I don't really have a favorite. They are all pretty shitty these days. They can't help it though, music itself is shitty these days.

There's a local chain called Be-Bop Records that I usually go to. Sometimes I go to Circuit City also. I like their set-up in there. They have the R&B section by itself. I can start with the As and browse through to the Zs. In Be-Bop, the R&B is mixed in with the pop/rock section.

For vinyl, I go to a used record store called The Little Big Store. I check them out about twice a year and give them time to get something else in. It's also too far away to be driving out there all the time.

2. if different; which store do you buy most of your music?

Be-Bop Records. They have a store in walking distance of my house.

3. what section do you browse 1st? (i.e. new releases, jazz, pop, etc..)

The R&B section if the store has one. A lot of stores have it mixed in with the pop/rock.

4. what was the last album you bought?

A compilation called "Old School Nation" (Volume 3).

5. what's the most amount of money you've spent on a purchase?

I've spent as much as $60 before on several albums. The most I've spent on one album is whatever the price was for Prince's "Emancipation".

6. do you return music at all? (not including defectives)

They don't give refunds. They will swap a defective CD for another one of the same. If they are out of that particular CD, they will order it. They never give refunds.

7. how long do you or can you spend in a music store?

I spent an hour and a half in one once.

8. do you have a 'midnight madness' sale (new releases sold the night prior) in your area; and how often do you go?

They don't have those in my area.

9. do you always buy a new release you've been waiting for on the day of?

Prince stuff, yes. I've usually had plenty of warning of the release date and have saved up for it. With other artists, I get it when I've got some money.

10. do you buy music online: never? once in a while? always/only? if i have to?

I have before but I try never to. When you buy something online, the damn telemarkers get your information and start calling. I'm also always afraid someone will steal the CD out of my mailbox. When I really want something, I usually get the record store to specially order it. Let the damn telemarkers harrass them instead. lol

11. do you think these stores will eventually become extinct due to downloading?

Maybe, but only when computers become affordable for everyone. Also, since downloading takes fucking hours for one song, the price of high speed internet service would have to become affordable to everyone also.

12. what's the most annoying thing for you when you walk into a music store?

Employees that can't answer any of your questions about a particular release date because they have no knowledge of any type of music except shit hop.

13. what's your favourite thing about walking into a music store?

Finally finding something that I never dreamed I would ever find.

14. do you keep the sleeves and cases to your cds or do you just keep the disc?

All my CDs are in their cases and all my albums are in their covers with their inside sleeves also. My 45s aren't in their sleeves though. I just have them in several stacks.

15. not including online: how easy/hard is it for you to find imports in your area?

I used to see an import section in the 1980s. I haven't really noticed lately if there is still one. I don't think so.

16. have you ever, or do you now, work in a record store? which one(s)?

I've never worked in one. I put in an application at one in the late 1980s though.

17. do you buy singles at all?

Do they even exist anymore? I haven't seen any. I used to buy 45s all the time. I have stacks and stacks of them. In the 1990s, I bought a lot of cassette singles also.

18. besides price and favourite artist, what prompts you most to buy a cd at that very moment?

I'm always in the mood to buy music. I just don't have the money to buy it every time the mood hits me. lol

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...?

I have bit the bullet and spent more than intended to before. However, most of the time, it's easy to resist. I can either buy it or not eat all next week. That helps me to make my decision real fast.

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you)

They never play nothing worth listening to. I find it more annoying than anything else.

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of.

"Stand Up For Love" by Sho-Nuff

i remember walking into a Tower records store; into their classical/jazz/soundtrack section more specifically. they had rearranged it. so i asked the guy behind the counter where the kept Ella Fitzgerald; his response was priceless. "Umm is she a new artist? Let me look that up."

eek

i told him it was ok. i'll find it myself. mind you he appeared to be the same age as me. give or take a couple of years. same thing happened when i called about a Gloria Estefan release the other day. the guy said, "Ok. her last name is Este-what? What kind of music is she?" good thing it was over the phone and not in person. neutral

I would stereotype those uninformed staff members as listeners of rock music, not hiphop.

I bought a CD a few months ago which was a greatest hits collection by the 1980s rap group, Freestyle. I found it in the various artists section when I was browsing through there. Every time I'm in the record store, the rap and hip hop is blaring through the store's speakers. Apparently these rap lovers working in the store don't even know their rap too well. lol

By the way, I ran into a store clerk once who didn't even know who Prince was. lol

dead falloff

one of the record stores i worked at had JAMES TAYLOR filed in country. eek
needless to say...i made them change that. lol

and what kills me is when stores have r&b separated from Pop/Rock, but then you'll find Prince & Janet Jackson in pop/rock and Michael Jackson is in R&B, or vice versa.

and i won't even go into how some catagorize their DANCE sections. lol

I think artists like those should be placed in both sections.

1. what's your favourite music (cd/record) shop?
I don't think I've found my favorite yet. lol Rasputin's and Amoeba are two of the best around here, but some of these pictures on here make me feel all sorts of sexual-type things.

2. if different; which store do you buy most of your music?
I spend most of my music money at eBay and The Last Record Store.

3. what section do you browse 1st? (i.e. new releases, jazz, pop, etc..)
I guess Rock/Alt/Punk/Pop/R&B. Or whatever.

4. what was the last album you bought?
A fat stack of sealed Prince 12" singles. boff Cleared the store's Prince stash (and my wallet) out in thirty seconds.

5. what's the most amount of money you've spent on a purchase?
On one thing? About $45.00. In one visit? I'm too embarrassed to admit.

6. do you return music at all? (not including defectives)
Never.

7. how long do you or can you spend in a music store?
Actually, not long. I have a problem putting things back. I feel faint and get heart palpitations.

8. do you have a 'midnight madness' sale (new releases sold the night prior) in your area; and how often do you go?
Not sure and I've never done it if so.

9. do you always buy a new release you've been waiting for on the day of?
I usually can't for money reasons.

10. do you buy music online: never? once in a while? always/only? if i have to?
Much. It's usually a necessity.

11. do you think these stores will eventually become extinct due to downloading?
I fucking hope not.

12. what's the most annoying thing for you when you walk into a music store?
Haven't read the thread but I'm sure it's been said:
* The huge display right when you walk in that proudly showcases every brand new idiot rapper and/or pop bitch.
* The employees. When their capabilities only stretch as far as where to point when you ask for the new Audioslave/Beyonce release, I'd rather they didn't ask if I need anything.

13. what's your favourite thing about walking into a music store?
The smell. I dated a guy who smelled dusty like a record store. He quickly got used to my burying my head in his jacket. Being around him and his glorious perfume gave me chills, elation, goosebumps.

14. do you keep the sleeves and cases to your cds or do you just keep the disc?
Everything. They're stacked everywhere and the cats are always knocking them over.

15. not including online: how easy/hard is it for you to find imports in your area?
In my immediate area, it's difficult. The city's not so bad, obviously.

16. have you ever, or do you now, work in a record store? which one(s)?
In my dreams.

17. do you buy singles at all?
I used to. Can't find them now.

18. besides price and favourite artist, what prompts you most to buy a cd at that very moment?
Sometimes, it's as easy as an intriguing review in one of my magazines or online. Much of the music I've grabbed onto in the last year has a lot to do with friends' urging.

19. how strong is your will power not to buy an album, when you find something you want even though it may be pricey, or may not have the exact songs you want, etc...?
Weak.

20. do you pay attention to the music playing in the store and have you bought the album that was playing? (specifically something new to you)
Yes.

21. recommend an album that you think most of us have never heard of.
