Actually the Police released 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' came out in 1980 a few years before LRC. (i know they got together and did that other version later, but the original (and best) version of that tune came out in 80")

as for the 'Dont Stand So Close To Me" and "Little Red Corvette" similarities, yeah i always thought there was a taste of the former in the latter...espescially the main keyboard chord progression in the background at the start of the tunes ...seems very similar to me...and even the hazy haunting vibe at the beginnings of both songs and how they build to their choruses...I'm not saying Prince swiped it, but yeah i always thought they did some similarities too...

DMSR seems to be talking about the 1986 version, not the original.

Ironically, I've ALWAYS definately heard The Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" in "Private Joy". The keyboard hook in Private Joy is damn near identical towards the end of "Every Little Thing". Ya'll should go check that out!

actually, you all missed it terribly. LRC is almost a carbon-copy of the supremes' "Up the Ladder to the Roof" Prince was very smart in how he borrowed
from the theme & overall structure of this classic supremes hit. the next time
any of you guys get a chance to hear the "orig" LRC=Up the ladder
Prince borrowed the beginning & more heavily the chorus itself...

I think most brilliant artists take what's ALREADY there & exapnd on it.
here's another example: "Insatiable" = "Call me" from Aretha Franklin
line them up next to each other & you'll see quite the same thing
Prince is absolutely amazing at re-working things His way.

Thanks for ruining things for me!
It's not the same when you know songs are stolen.

Prince is original 99% of the time though, right?

no
its a known fact that p steals from his influences
its not his fault, its just part of an artists creative process...
alot of artist usually base a song they're doing currently on songs from their influencers
i do it all the time...

the key that changes plagerist from normal artist is,
normal artist make alot of cosmetic change to songs, IE Key changes, Chord Changes, Bass line changes, using their creativity to take someone elses song and make it theirs, make it original...

Sorry, Mikek1 ! sad
"Original" is a very relative term, especially dealing with a genius.
There's many more examples from just Prince alone. Actually, THE MOST
Carbon-Copy-isms that he's done over the years is a song from Rance Allen's
1972 lp "God's where it's at" The song is called "Look Around" this song
can be dangerously compared to "Gotta Broken Heart Again" it's really lifted.

Well then music doesn't flow through Prince then. He can't have a gift if he just changes others music. Alot of people do can do that. Creating something truly orginal makes someone a genius. i.e Hendrix; voodoo child

well it is "Original" material
just because he takes a few thing from his heros, doesn't mean it isn't original
P was famous because he re-generated the Term of a Funk Rocker...
Before than Funk was funk, and rock was rock,
P stole from people like led zeppelin, parliment, aretha franklin, Jimi Hendrix
and made Funk Rock a staple, Much how like Hendrix & The Doors stole from funk and Jazz created psychedelic rock.

Its original, but it has its roots in other music....
Their is no such thing as a completely original song...
so sorry

hate to break your spirit, he stole most of his stuff from funksters and old School Blues guitarist
Hendrix is a clear example of taking others people music and making it his
IE Along The Watch tower
which was originally composed and written by Bob Dylan

Of course but there's a difference between influence and direct stealing.

Oasis are the biggest e.g of DIRECT LIFTING. Nearly every single song of every album contains either lifted bass, drums or guitar.

Nobody's above influence
In order to make good music, you have to like and be inspired by equally good music...
U wanna know why Prince is a brilliant song writer?
who's one of his biggest influences, Joni Mitchel
wanna know why P is a great Guitarist, who are his influences? Santana, jimi
A Great funkster? GEorge Clinton, Parliment, Graham Central Station, so on...
Great Rockstar? jimmy Page, Rockstar God
Great Jazz player? Miles Davis

can go on and on and on
For each Talent p has, he was influenced by soomebody before him...

WHICH IS NORMAL:
