I just think there is too much emphasis put on debuts these days, i mean JD's ramblings the last few days on websites, are borderline what Mariah Carey was ranting about when Glitter came out, talking about sabotage and things like that. OK if you dont like labels, then walk away and put things out on yur own, I hate when artists talk it, but dont walk it, at least Prince walked away from the label thing, though he does things on and off for them, its all his game now. The emphasis that is put on debuts and things like that is why we get this "HYPE" and then no delivery and then let down. I think of all the albums i have bought this year and enjoyed and 90% of them werent "chart toppers or even close", but i think that made me enjoy it more, i wasnt HYPED into this whole train of thought. It used to be you watched a record climb the chart, or just make the chart, now a days its all about week 1 and the fall, and how much your not selling. Till the industry starts to rethink its thought process, nothing will change. There are so many records that sell consistently that we dont even hear about, some that dont even chart. She's not doing any better worldwide either:
UK: 3000, #63 IRELAND: failed to chart (less than 750 copies) AUSTRALIA: failed to chart (less than 1000 copies) JAPAN: 12,000 Honestly, I was expecting something bigger than that. With like 6 different versions of the cd released & loads of fans buying all versions & the big Oprah appearance. I'm scared to think what she would've done without that. This is even less sold than "Damita Jo". [Edited 10/3/06 17:24pm] love is a fate resigned memories mar my mind love it is a fate resigned Over futile odds and laughed at by the Gods and now the final frame Love is a losing game

By no means is this a top notch Janet Jackson album, but the fact that all of the no 1 debuts this year (with the exception of Timberlake, Beyonce and Christina Agullera) have been averaging anywhere from 100, 000 to 150, 000 has to be looked at...That chick did over 300, 000 her first week with hardly any radio presence and MTV...Those numbers would usually get you the no. 1 slot...The shit more than exceeded expectations (shit, I thought it was going to sell under 200, 000 before the Oprah show) As far as Ludacris, I think the folks "shocked" about the man being no. 1 need to check the past stats...His last two albums were massive first week sellers...It's 2006 people...wake up and do your homework folks.... i guess this is kinda sucky for her big comeback, huh? outdone by ludacris? i wonder if she'll fall off the top five next week? I'm pretty sure janet, The Velvet Rope, and All For You debuted at #1. RN1814 was pre-Soundscan, and #1 debuts were much harder to come by at the time, so I'm assuming it climbed to the top spot. As far as "loyalty" is concerned, I'm a long-time Janet fan and I debated over whether or not to even spend my $10 on the CD. I caved and bought it, but it had more to do with liking a few cuts from the cd and wanting to complete my collection than from any misguided ideas about loyalty. I almost don't want Janet to hit #1 just so she knows that many members of her fanbase are turned off by her new direction. Hopefully her next album will be more Control - Velvet Rope caliber. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Hmm? That sucks, but it shows what happens when MTV kisses your ass and treats you like a king (Luda) and treats ignores you and treats you like trash (Janet)...shockingly, not that much difference, but with at least some MTV support, Janet would've beeen number one! But it's not the end of the world. The album has a lot of potentail, if Virgin keeps it up. Good, the album charts are terrible. Those opening numbers are below DJ.

I decided not to care about the debut. I would have loved if Janet had reached #1, but it wasn't meant to be.
I just hope she's not discouraged. I hope that she still continues her plans for a tour even IF the cd is not the best-selling of all time. I really sort of like the direction of her 20 Y.O.--particularly the last half. I really think that this is a transition, and if Janet decides to give it another go, she might surprise a lot of people.

I wouldn't necessarily blame the lack of support from MTV for Janet's current album sales. MTV may have helped Ludacris, Justin and Christina, but they also kissed Jessica Simpson's ass so much that they got a dirty Sanchez; yet their ass-kissing didn't do anything for her album. I think you have to remember that these album debuts were very much in line to what was going on 10 to 15 years ago. If a superstar sold 300,000 copies their first week, they had a phenomenally successful album debut. The super-inflated first week album sales of 800,000+ copies didn't begin happening until 1999. and that even ended for the most part by 2002. What should be more disturbing to the record companies and so-called superstars is the precipitous drop in album sales after the first week. Granted, if an album sold 750,000 copies the first week, it wasn't uncommon for the next week's sales to drop off by 40%, but the declines would soon level off into the 5 to 10 percent range in subsequent weeks. These days, however, the sales are dropping 50%, 35%, and 25%, which means that todays albums are being discarded at an alarmingly rapid rate.
