Janet's UK album chart position: #63

It's just so amusing to see how she's totally dropped off the radar here. It's not like she's never been successful here so it's fun to think up reasons biggrin

janet is hated in the UK for some reason. she always gets bad press there. tellingly they still refer to her in the press as the "that's the way love goes" singer.
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

I think Together Again was pretty big for Janet in the UK if i'm not mistaken.

Does she even have much of a fanbase in the UK. I really can't see any of Janet's new music appealing to the European market.

Well I've seen an existing UK group of Janet fans when a friend invited me to one of their London get togethers, and only a couple of them overlapped as Michael fans too. Granted, it was in a gay bar!

It's just that with the Janet album it was like she finally broke through, and The Velvet Rope singles did really well - although Janet fans do like to talk-up the success of Together Again as some sort of triumph for a large selling non-#1 despite the fact that there were 2 other solo female non-#1 singles in the Top 10 at the exact same time to sell more. Twas just a high selling year in general razz

That's pretty much totally wrong. She doesn't get much press at all and when she does it's rarely negative, just mentions for what she's doing if she's in town.

what is this crap about? Janet is not hated in the UK. Or WAS not hated in the UK

Before SB she was successful and the AFY ablum peaked at #2 with DRM at #5, AFY #3, STCML #11 and SOAG #13. Not great, but certainly not a failure.

But it seems that the SB backlash has been felt across Europe with radio station ignoring her singles. You can say COM is not good but "all nite" deserved to be a success. However since SB ALL THE SINGLES RELEASED HAVE BEEN TOP 20 HITS. I'm afraid to say thats a hell alot better than Prince's singles lately yes even with the BRIT performance.

And there is no point comparing Janet to Madonna in Europe. She can release a piece of turd and it would get to #1 ahem "american pie", "american life"....

So you know some people like to make Janet's UK stats look worse then they really are. I'd like to add that she is in the list of 100 most sucessful artists in the UK just a few spots behind legends such as Geroge Michael and Mariah Carey.

I'm in the UK and i know there are plenty of Janet fans who do not overlap as Michael fans either. In fact Janet is hated amongst Michael's UK fans.

Can I just say that in Europe there is NO Superbowl backlash. The whole thing here lasted perhaps 2 days with us all laughing hysterically at the over-reaction in the US media. It had sod all to do with Janet herself.

Meh, not really true. I've been to loads of MJ fan gatherings, and although most of the time I sit in the corner with my friends laughing at the freaks, we do talk to a lot of them. Most of them either like Janet or if not, just don't have an opinion. Lots of them are still hating on LaToya for some reason.

Oh, and the George Michael/Mariah Carey comparison - George Michael just isn't prolific so can't clock up chart stats too often. Mariah Carey is on the same level as Janet, i.e. huge in the US, just semi-successful here.

I don't believe it. Janet had major airplay in the UK with AFY, more than Mariah and Michael. But all of a sudden it stopped after SB. I remember hearing "Just a little while" on the radio frequently before and just after SB then all of a sudden it was gone at the same time as it was slipping from the billboard charts. I don't know if it was a conscious decsion to stop playing Janet but SB did have some sort of effect on janet's success across the world. You being British should know how much of the rest of the world are like sheep following American music trends.

What trends? lol America doesn't play any variety on their radio stations like the UK does, which is why Madonna was able to do well in the UK and meh in the US.
America isn't starting any trends at the moment, they're stuck at a dead end repeating the same shit they've been doing since the new millenium. confused

Janet's new album is following the American trends, which the UK hasn't been picking up on.

I seriously think the airplay think has to do with the shit records she's releasing and not the SB. Or maybe the oft talked about cancelled European tour after 9/11 due to the cited reason of air-security issues but STILL playing Hawaii and Japan. Tonnes of people were well annoyed with her after that.
