creatively i don't even think its questionable. achtung baby is incomparably their best work. it may not be your favorite but its their most creative, moody, artistic, experimental, and successful record.
sure, joshua tree gave them the freedom to make an achtung baby and zooropa was even more experimental. the whole process surrounding achtung baby...the tour, the image, the sound...what other band/artist went from the organic sound of something like joshua tree to the electronic, industrial feel of achtung baby. that's a helluva jump. and it went over perfectly. longtime fans loved it and moved forward with the band, new fans "discovered" u2 could really rock!

I came to the conclusion that Pop was the last U2 album that mattered...ATYCLB and the last one where so lame and unoriginal...
I remember putting the lyrics for Staring at the sun and Gon on my english and history notebooks! The Highschool days...Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins... [Edited 10/1/06 13:45pm]

Funny. For some reason I thought you were. i don't dislike them, but i don't really have a huge interest in them, either. i was a kinda-fan around the time of achtung and zooropa, but i haven't much liked 'pop' or anything they've done since.

Ah. For some reason I thought I remembered seeing you on threads about them when their last few albums were released.

Ah. For some reason I thought I remembered seeing you on threads about them when their last few albums were released. for some reason i always get their new albums when they come out. then i listen a few times, don't like, then sell 'em back to the wrecka stow. i guess i keep waiting for the next big brilliant rocked-out thing by them.

If you're just a so-so fan like me, this is easily the best album:

I like Rattle and Hum. Sure, it's fearfully earnest, BUT it does have some good songs.... "Heartland" especially. I've always thought it was an underrated song.

"All I Want Is You", "Desire" and "Angel of Harlem" are all killer too.

at the Rattle and Hum negativity.
My pick for "Best" album would probably also be "Achtung Baby", pretty much for the reasons that Sassy gave. It was just a very ballsy, deliberate piece. You may not have loved it, but you had to respect it. Plus, it was probably Bono's lyrical zenith. Amazing. My favorite record seems to change by the day, but lately it has been Zooropa. I really appreciate the crazy underground dance vibe flowing through most of the disc. I also think it was one of their most experimental and varied albums. You have a 'Station to Station'-esque jam (Zooropa), an almost rap cut (Numb), disco (Lemon), a beautiful acoustic song (The First Time), a classicist U2 song (Stay), industrial (well, for U2... 'Dirty Day') and a space-age country cut (The Wanderer). Anyway... I've said it before, and I'll say it again; I don't think that there is a bad album amongst the bunch. There are obviously stronger (Achtung, Joshua, War) and weaker albums (October), but they're all good, if not great. Viva U2! Can't wait to hear the album they're working on now with Rick Rubin... I'm the first mammal to wear pants.
