the rare, forgotten Earth Wind and Fire album that nobody ever talks about In 1971,Earth Wind and Fire did the soundtrack to the controversial blaxploitation movie "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song".At the time,EW&F were a new band, having just released their first album.Philip Bailey wasn't even in the band at this point (he joined in late 1972,just in time for the 'Last Days and Time' album).'Sweet Sweetback' is a wild album...full of jazzy funk, dialogue and sound effects from the film, and lots of horns. There aren't any real "songs" here, just alot of mostly instrumental grooves but even at this early stage,it was clear that Earth Wind and Fire could really play! Anyone got this album? I have the remastered CD that came out several years ago.

I saw the movie once a few years ago. Good, if somewhat typical, movie of its genre, but I do need to rewatch it back to back with this one: I didn't know EWF did the music. I'm gonna give the album a listen.

Yeah This is definitely that Other Earth Wind and Fire...a lot wilder, Freer..... you listen to this one and hear a band that was weaned heavily on Coltrane, as well as Miles, African Music, Blues and gutbucket R&B/Soul...real dark, earthy, and jazzy, expansive grooves, certainly no Pop in here yet.... I kinda get the same feel from the movie itself..anybody who's seen Melvin Van Peebles' films will know what I mean, some of it has the real, gritty feel, but then there's certain elements in it that seem non-linear, kind of odd, stream of conscousness stuff.....a fascinating movie, though.... ...
