as an artist of any sort, sting should stop telling other people how to represent their work. i don't care for beyonce or justin but i'm not about to tell them what they should or shouldn't do when representing themselves.

Does have a new album coming out soon?

Funny he would spotlight Justin & Beyoncé out of the bunch.

I think once again this was a question used for the interviewer to get their soundbyte, I dont think Sting really is going to get attention to an album because he says Justin has no soul, i mean lets be real, people who like Sting will buy his record and people who dont wont, hes not gaining fans because of his comment. The same thing was said of MYA and her comments about 50 cent, everyone accused her of taking a shot at him because she has a new album, well that new album is 3 months away, so i doubt it was that, also VIBE who interviewed her asked her only 2 questions about her new album and then everything else was about, who are u with, who have u been with, 50 cent said he slept with u. This generation will be known as the Soundbyte gerneration.

I want to hear younger artists make these kinds of statements. Sting will get written off as being old and dated. A younger artist with substance I mean. Whoever that may be these days.

Sting isn't necessarily wrong, but what's up with all these artists coming out and dissing each other... by name, no less!?! shake Doesn't anyone observe restraint, anymore? It's like Joni, Sting and Bob Dylan have been taking adult education classes at the Tupac/Biggie School of Dissing. Soon there will be folk battles. lol

Anyway, as much as I like Sting -- and even agree -- he does need to get off his pedestal. "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" is clever, but it ain't exactly Psalms. confused

Yeah but once again, this is called a soundbyte of an interview that had nothing to do with Beyonce or Justin. Its not like Sting called the press and said "I wanna trash Beyonce and Justin", knowing the way magazines work this is what they call their buy line. Im sure the question went like "So what do u think of music today, like Justin and Beyonce, since they are chart toppers" and of course Sting replied Honestly "I think the music is Soul-less" hes not saying Justin and Beyonce are No talents, hes not saying they are bad either, hes pointing something out that we all point out here on the daily!

I love Sting, but I agree with you here.

This something interesting I found today after looking-up a Frank Zappa quote concerning the nature of art.

"Leo Tolstoy, on the other hand, claims that what makes something art or not is how it is experienced by its audience, not by the intention of its creator."

Frank Zappa's view of art was "Art is making something out of nothing then selling it."

I so I guess Zappa wouldn't agree with Sting-- or maybe Zappa definition is more art is in the eye of the beholder.

Granted. But no doubt someone as experienced with media as Sting knows that whatever you say on the record is up for grabs... and very likely subject to dramatization, especially when you're dealing with an international pop culture mag.

Given that Sting has worked with the likes of Diddy ill, my guess is he has some respect for the new school. But it's waaaay too easy to have one's words twisted. He may have been drawn out to say these things, but barring a flat out misquote, he did say 'em. Sources need to be mindful of the raw material they give reporters to work with... unless, that is, they're like my girl Joni, and just don't give a crap who's feathers they ruffle. biggrin

I agree with the sentiment, but he had Mary J. Blige's horrible singing on his last album. disbelief

I would've preferred Beyonce, and I can't stand her music.

The whole Cult of Mary J. fascinates me.

Despite the fact I can't stand her voice and have always been unimpressed by her work, there is still something I've grown to like about her. hmm

I suspect folk are warm to her based on her street cred and personal testimonial. Let someone as wack as Lumidee go through molestation, addiction, marital problems, deaths of close family and friends and bounce back triumphantly, and even she'd be the darling of soul music.

Its funny how we all jump on STING for his comment and yet this all i have heard for months is the ragging on Beyonce and Justin for being nothing more than studio creations, and hear someone echoes our opinions and we trash him.

I think Sting is very soulful, to me soul is not a color but the risks u take with your craft, imagination, and all of that is SOUL. Annie Lennox has 1000 times more Soul than Ciara, but in a record store CIARA is in the Soul section and Annie is in Pop. I think Sting was not really knocking the talent of beyonce or justin, just in the way the music was put together and made, and he's 100% correct with his statement.

dancing jig

I also agree. I believe Sting can toot his own horn here and I really don't care if he's put out anything lately. That's the problem with music, we eat our way through an artists music like foodaholic does cupcakes. I'd rather get something of quality than quantity. I can't stand the "pro tools" era because it incites artists to be too lazy and everything sounds so perfect, it's just boring. And Elvis Costello needs to shut the hell up and worry about his own career.

Does a person have to be soulful in order to know soul when they hear it? I don't think so. So what Sting isn't soulful. He has ears. lol

I mentioned a few months ago that I didn't think that Beyonce had a soulful voice.

So Sting doesnt relate to the most recent chart toppers? Oh well...Off the new CD, I feel Beyonce on "Resentment," and I loved her on "Speechless" from her last CD. Overall, to my ears she's starting to sing like she may understand the lyrics. Justin doesn't seem ready to me, but we all have our faves. Mahalia may take me to a different place than Justin. But that's Ok. I know where to go to hear music that fits or counters my moods. When I'm getting ready to go out it's Kylie, Basement Jaxx, Beyonce (I love that "Get Me Bodied- pat your weave" mix biggrin ) etc. If I wanna relax it may be Sade or Anita Baker.....I've never found much use for STING! at all, but it does my heart good to hear he is pleased with his recording process/results.

I agree with Sting. Many of these younger artists are simply making product, but they're not making real meaningful music that will have an impact years from now.Beyonce and Justin's music is like fast food.

He's aged gracefully though. And actually changed thru his career which is more than you can say for most artists his age. I'm glad he's not up there like the Stones trying to pretend he's 20 years old. Hey Mick, the wrinkles give you away! lol
