not to be insensitive, but the world would be the same with or without him in it. death, especially sudden, unexpected ones, have a strange way of immortalizing people. he was a great songwriter in his era, but i'm not sure he would have had any musical influence in the 90's or now. (see paul mccartney)

Excellent point. I love John Lennon, but he like many others who lost their lives during the height of their fame have the benefit of not suffering through what happens to all great artists, with the exception of Miles. They are replaced by a new sound and peoples interests change and then somehow they are stale, has beens and no longer hip. Enjoy his legacy for what it is and enjoy the fact that he was able to maintain that level of respect.

Enjoy his legacy for what it is and enjoy the fact that he was able to maintain that level of respect. Thing is John was actually pretty far from his prime when he died. He'd made some great albums in the early 70s but he was somewhat incosistent as a whole in his solo career and he'd completely disappeared as a recording artist in the late 70s only to return with Double Fantasy, which was good but nowhere near the same caliber as Plastic Ono Band or Imagine etc.. John is the most esteemed Beatle because he came across as the most artsy/enigmatic and because he died first, plain and simple. He was a great songwriter and a genius no doubt, but in terms of overall musical talent Paul was the best Beatle (and the most dominant member of the group post Rubber Soul), and in terms of defying commerciality and staying true to his principles, the best Beatle was George. None of the other Beatles were major defining musical forces in their solo careers (which isn't a judgement on how good their albums were, just on how much continued innovation/impact they had), even when at the peak of their powers, and John was no exception. If he were alive, he'd be just like the others, a semi-forgotten (unfortunately) rock dinosaur who'd be alternatively worshipped and dismissed with little relevance to the mainstream trends or the cutting edge.

i don't think he was past his prime at all. There were some amazing things on double fantasy. Watching the Wheels is as beautiful as anything he had written. Plus he seemed to be writing ALOT of strong material, some of which ended up on Milk and Honey. It's hard to imagine what the future would have brought, but i think it's safe to say that based on Double Fantasy that he had many years of great songs ahead of him had he lived.

No comparison between the artistic compromise of Lennon with the sell-out of McCartney. I believe Lennon would record interesting and good albums during the 80s and 90s. See for example Dylan... "Todo está bien chévere" Stevie

Exactly. Now if Elvis was still alive things would be better. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

People would ditch him for the 2nd youngster. Ain't no room for elders in the industry nowadays.
Anyway, not a fan,,,so I don't think I'll miss much.

This man was completely ahead of his time and was taken from us far too soon I believe if he were alive he still would have been a voice for peace and human rights and that he would've participated in as many causes (i.e. Live Aid etc) as he could - but as for his music remaining relevant - well, we'll just never know. I do miss him, though. VOTE....EARLY

I'm sure he would have liked Prince even more than Paul McCartney does. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

Depends of what kind of albums he would release in the 80s, Double Fantasy wasn't very good... Anyway his image wouldn't be as good as it is now, music-lovers would still love his music but the rest would see him as an eccentric.

Not sure. But certainly Prince is closer to Lennon than Macca Cold Turkey, Come Together... He would have liked Sign O' the Times, When doves Cry...Tambourine.... but I actually thnk Prince is closer to McCartney with their unabashed pop sensibilities and elaborate scope of grandeur and concept. He'd say: "Bloody 'ell to the naw mate" to this:
http://www.youtube.com/wa...AcNp6cCEWY And divorce Yoko for Lucy Lu. (For six months until they reunited.) [Edited 8/23/06 18:47pm] "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

I think he's more like John; always taking left turns artistically and in his personal life, often contradicting himself, coming across very engimatic and uncategorizable, but keeping at least half an eye cocked on the charts and commercial expectations. In terms of stage presence/schmaltz, he's definitely more like Paul though, but I think he's better than either as a live performer.

[Edited 8/23/06 18:47pm] what is this new trend of fake videos of a known band supposedly covering a song, but in actuality it is the original artist's live rendition simply dubbed over video footage tha obviously doesn't even match? For sure he would make some great music. He was in peace with himself when he decided to make a new record again (Double Fantasy). Double Fantasy is not that bad at all. 'Wathching the wheels' is my all time favorite Lennon song.
The release of Milk and Honey showed that there was more to come... And yeah perhaps he wouldn't be 'BIG news' anymore, but that has nothing to do with the music itself. The last album George made is his very best IMO, the same for Paul (Chaos and Creation). Quality has nothing to do with a Billboard nr. 1 position. I truly believe that the best was still to come... I think that a lot of musicians wanted to work with John and the otherway around. People like Beck for instance...now that would be something! To be honest...I really miss the man...

This man was completely ahead of his time and was taken from us far too soon I doubt he would have won a Grammy. DF is a decent album, though ruined by inclusion of Yoko's songs. His death, late in 1980, surely garnered a lot of sympathy votes, The Dude was big and folks felt they owed the Dan for Gaucho (Fleetwood Mac beat Aja with Rumors in 1977). 1981 GRAMMY - Album of the Year Gaucho - Steely Dan The Dude - Quincy Jones Double Fantasy - John Lennon, Yoko Ono Mistaken Identity - Kim Carnes Breakin' Away - Al Jarreau test

John would have been standing next to Boy George during the Do They Know its Christmas video shoot.
a Beatles reunion at Live Aid. John & Yoko divorced. John Lennon Unplugged. The Flava of Lennon. something like that. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on
