Where's SDL, he should be all over this thread.
So far, I REALLY like it. Better than Geuro, IMO, because he doesn't seem to be trying to so hard to live up to the ironic funk dude persona. Much more organic, and surprisingly rock-y.

lots of cool songs on it. on the whole it doesn't hit me as hard
as "Guero" did but i think it's simply an album that you have to spin a few times and discover new stuff with each spin. my fav track right now is the title song, that's sooo beautiful! and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Will there be a single CD version or only coupled with a video disc?

Yeahhh.. I got mine the other night.
fantastic! Its not as much "rappin" type stuff as I initially thought.. It's a great mix of his style..

my quick run through upon first few listens..
Elevator Music - I dig it alot..funky bit, nice bass line driving it. Beck is kindof half way singing/rappin through it.. His ideal sporratic lyrics. It sounds borderline out of tune, to give it an extra rough end to it. very interesting approach to an intro to the album. Think I'm in Love - This sounds like a lost Beatle song to me.. The bass line, chorus/bridge/lyrics.. everything is very Beatle like. I think if it were a beatle track, it would contain a lot more energy to it, but over all.. very very impressed with the sound on this one. the middle part "What if its wrong" is simply a beautiful part of this album. Cell Phones Dead - I'm sure this will be the majorities favorite. The synth line sounds so familiar, it made me think i'd heard it before.. or a thousand times upon my first listen. This is a hip/hop/throwin random lyrics all over the place.. It contains a simular set up like "Hell Yes".. he has a kid go "one by one I'll Knock you out".. song takes a jungle type beat turn towards the end with a cello, and moaning sounding harmonies. Very dancable song. Strange Apparition - Very upbeat, optomistic melody. This song is very catchy, towards the midline of the song, it gets slightly slower, kindof givin a country-ish feel to it. this is a singing track. no raps Soldier Jane - Synth line goin throughout the entire song. Upbeat, singing track with a really pretty melody. i dig it. simple and funky Nausea - this one is up for a single at iTunes. Poor choice for a single. it will remind a lot of the Odelay era. Its a good song, Funky and catchy. I just think compared to the rest of the album its b-side material. New Round - This is one of the best tracks. Nice guitar pick driving the song with a really nice beat/groove to it. It reminds me of a "Lost Cause" / "Mutation" era groove, if it were to be compared to something. Very nice. Dark Star - This is a dark, funky little groove. Got a lot of strings in it, a small harmonica solo.. Another big highlight. We Dance Alone - Sounds really Modern, the synth and sound effects give it some space jam sound. The album is only getting better with each song imo. No Complaints - Not a favorite as of yet. Very simple groove. Much in the same style as Elevator Music. 1000 BPM - Possibly one of the most experimental tracks of the bunch. this is definantly an odelay moment. Half rapping/giving us sporratic lyrics with a crazy beat with noisy sound effects. Motorcade - very glitchy beat. Deep bass to it. Another experimental track The Information - this song sounds so retro to me.. like a lost 60's psychodelica track or something.. The female moans in and out of the track are a big plus. Nice one. Movie Theme - sounds like a mutation era songs. It's the slowest track of the bunch. Very space like sounding, psychodelic, floating in the air track.. Drum machine, nice melody. The Horrible Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton - This is really deep. deeper than beck has ever gotten on an album. A song that exceeds 10 minutes. Very experimental. It sounds like the middle to end of the track is touching on his beliefs.. perhaps some scientology references.. I'm not a scientologist so I can't confirm that.. but some of the lyrics and things that are said will raise eye brows as to what he's really talkin bout. Oh, and did I say it was brilliant? 4.5/5 stars. Excellent album. well done Mr. B. [Edited 9/24/06 23:06pm]

[Edited 9/23/06 15:21pm] Yes! Cell Phone's Dead bassline is very reminescent of Chameleon from Herbie, and that's OK, just recoginize. Really diggin the new Beck. It's a "grower", as they say. The more I listen, the more I enjoy. The best kind. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

Agree with you Sdl, this album is a grower. How do you compare this to Guero? Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I think that this album has a deeper core, and takes a little time to warm up to, but will probably be listening to this album more than any of this other cd's in the long run (Except sea change) I think the production is spot on too.

Agreed. I really like Guero, but I seem to be drawn to this new one more. I don't know why. I know I love Nigel Godrich's production skills so that may have something to do with it. There's alot more going on than meets the eye. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.
