DJ Shadow - The Outsider... WTF?!

I love practically every album of his, up until this one. When he initially posted comments about it prior to it's release, explaining that he was going to loose some fans with this record, I was all the more excited about it - till I actually heard it.

Other reviews of it are describing it as "hyphy" which is apparently some sub genre of hip hop that I know nothing about. I don't even know how to pronounce it, LOL.

Kinda bummed though, cuz I was really looking forward to something new from him. I hope this is just a phase he's going through and not a permanent direction for him.

What does "hyphy" sound like anyway?

I liked Endtroducing a lot, but I never followed his career after that.

I was just checking this album out the other day and didn't find it to be my cup of tea. I loved Endtroducing... and some stuff off his other releases. I'll have to pass on this one.

Yea, I loved Shadow. However early reports indicate that this cd is not what you're used to getting from him. I loved him in his Mo Wax "trip Hop" days. Not so sure about this Hyphy movement (California thing). Even though E-40 and a few other cats been doing that for a minute.

If you liked Endtroducing, you will probabbly also like Preemptive Strike, it's very similar. The Private Press is a bit edgier and more erratic, it's kind of like a concept album, but also really good too. His live set "In Tune and On Time" is freaking amazing, it's almost like a greatest hits album in many ways, only better.

The Outsider sounds like a sellout album IMO. It doesn't sound like him at all, but rather all the crap you hear on the radios nowdays.

Well, then I'd hate it. lol

As for the others, I've always been meaning to check things out beyond his first one. nod

according to an article in SFWeekly this is the new direction he is going in.

All artists grow and change. Although I don't know a lot of his music or this new hyphy thing, he did say it was going in a different direction. I think he'll end up fusing the two together. Besides, there's more money in hip-hop type stuff. biggrin

i heard some of the songs a while ago and i liked them for
what they were. not as dj shadow songs though since i've
come to expect a different style from him which i prefer
to this one.

but purely based on a song 2 song basis, i like the stuff.
although i wouldn't play it every day.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
