Ashes to Ashes(Bowie)-lyric question help

What in the world are we to infer about "Pictures of Jap girls in synthesis"...

I noticed on more recent versions, he edit this line out live, but what was the original intent of the line?
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

"But the little green wheels are following me ... Oh no, not again"

I don't know, but it's a great song. A perfect song even, IMO.

Oh and UK people should not forget to watch 'Extras' tonight, because Bowie is on there.
And I have to post this, since recent photos of Bowie were kinda, well, depressing. Here he looks quite good, and my God, Iman is stunning.

I get China Girl....The lyrics are very picturesque...you just have to connect the dots smile

The youtube live version I saw of A2A was from 2004, but he immediately jumped into the chorus.

The reason I ask (it is my favorite Bowie song BTW) is because Mojo mag did a Bowie tribute issue a couple of years back and the song when broken down is as many know, a follow up to Space Oddity.

The line about "Jap girls" always struck me as odd, but my theory is this:

The song is autobiographical and the line may refer to his inspiration for Ziggy Stardust. HE stated that a Japanese fashion designer(Kensai Yamamoto) who designer kabuki outfits designed models that would serve as the prototype for the Ziggy stuff that came.

This comes across as out of order with the song since Ziggy is not the focus of the song, but Major Tom is. GReat song though.
"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."
