that's not about hendrix; the mushroom cloud is from a bomb!

It IS about Hendrix. Out of many books I have about Jimi, one of them has where Jimi is qouted talking about when he was in grade school and how he didn't want to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and later, he dropped out of high school. Now, if you can't see where the first lines in P's lyrics weren't directed to Jimi, then I don't know what to tell you. And dealing with the mushroom cloud line, I KNOW that's code for a bomb, BUT it's also code for drugs. And P's reference is that since nothing made Jimi proud and that he was a known drug user, look where and how he ended up. Those are clear digs at Hendrix. I'll even go on to say that the picture of the little black boy waving the flag is supposed to represent Hendrix. That also is tied in to those lyrics in the song "America".

Could it be maybe that it wa supposed to be the point of view of someone else, instead of Prince's own. I don't know. In any case, it can only be a temporary confusion! lol

Here are the lyrics to the song. If what you say is true concerning the connection with Jimi Hendrix, then perhaps Prince is suggesting that society (America) is failing its people, and Prince is using Jimi Hendrix's life as an example of that failure. Therefore, I doubt if Prince is attempting to portray Jimi in the negative sense. I would rather believe Prince's lyrics reflect his frustrations regarding american society.

America Lyrics

Yeah
Peace!

Aristocrats on a mountain climb
Making money, losing time
Communism is just a word
But if the government turn over
It'll be the only word that's heard

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Little sister making minimum wage
Living in a 1-room jungle-monkey cage
Can't get over, she's almost dead
She may not be in the black
But she's happy she ain't in the red

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Freedom
Love
Joy
Peace

Jimmy Nothing never went 2 school
They made him pledge allegiance
He said it wasn't cool
Nothing made Jimmy proud
Now Jimmy lives on a mushroom cloud

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

America, America
God shed his grace on thee
America, America
Keep the children free

Freedom
Love
Joy
Peace

boom, boom, boom, boom
the bomb go
boom, boom, boom, boom
the bomb go boom.
Teacher, why won't Jimmy pledge allegiance?

First of all, Jimi's spelling of his name is something that he changed once he got to England in 1966. Up untill that point, Jimi spelled his name like everyone else, Jimmy or he used the name James. Although Johnny Allen was Jimi's actual Christian birth name. It was legally changed later when Jimi was very young. Second, P wouldn't spell Jimi's name "Jimi" being that would be to obvious. P is too coy for that. Like I posted earlier, taken from the actual things that Jimi himself said had happened are direct references in P's lyrics in the verse where Jimmy Nothing is mentioned. I believe like I always believed that P is refering to Hendrix. Granted, it's an opinion, but it's mine.

I don't know how many of ya'll recall a thread I wrote quite sometime ago on songs about Jimi Hendrix. I know The Audience and SPYZ remembers cuz they posted on it. Anyway, on that thread, I mentioned the song "Ziggy Stardust" by Bowie and P's song "America". That thread was about a year ago. Trust me, I can see how many on here, especially who are serious P fans, wouldn't want to think that P would refer to Hendrix in that way. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone on here who has more love and respect for Hendrix and Prince than I. Both men's influence on me musically has been deep, ever since I was a child. Folks on here who has my music can attest to this. BUT, with all that being the case, I STILL believe this is where P was coming from. I believed it in 85 and I believe it today. A drag it might be.

I'm just saying, "jimmy nothing" is kind of harsh. I guess it's possible. P hated seeing Sly not show up for shows and he promised himself that he would always make his own shows. We all know P never got into the drug scene like that and I'm glad he didn't. I respect your opinion but I just think it's in reference to a fictional character, maybe somebody like Hendrix. P clearly has a great deal of respect for him, if he didn't he would not have been on the tribute album. So why wold he call the man a "nothing" or in other words, a "nobody"?

Also everybody has the right to interpret art the way they feel, I am not the type that will argue that. I respect your opinion even if I see it differently.

Besides I am not one to argue, last time I got into a argument on the org I got shot.

I'm not diagreeing with you in regards to whom Prince is referring to in the song. I believe if you read the lyrics you can see that Prince's portrayal of America is negative. I believe Prince is using "Jimmy" or Jimi Hendrix as an example of how some people in america don't trust the government. I believe the "Jimmy Nothing" lyric refers to the people who believe this country treats its citizens very poorly. In other words, the welfare of people such as "Jimmy" is not a concern for the "aristocrats" who run this country. Overall, I believe the song is more of a social commentary concerning this country, and not a personal attack against Jimi Hendrix.
