after listening to all 13 tracks including the bonus tracks BET was so kind to include, i like only 3 songs. I'm diggin' "this body"...its pretty hot. i'm also really enjoying "with u." the first time i heard a clip of that i was not impressed but i actually really like the track. i LOVELOVELOVE "enjoy!" i think "enjoy" is one of her best songs in a long, long time.

sadly, that's it. all of the other songs either sound to generic for me to really care about them or i just flat out dislike them. the first four songs are simply ok. typical, run of the mill, generic rnb tracks. actually, excluding the three songs i mentioned by title, the whole album is mediocre at best. and i think i'm being generous in that assessment.

i know the janet brigade is gonna roll up in here and tell me how much i suck and how much this record is the best in her career and blah blah puke. i'm ok with that. i hope the majority of her longtime fans don't fall in line with my opinion of the record. personally, janet has been my favorite female pop star since...oh, i don't know...forever. i'm incredibly disappointed. i hear JD all over this piece of generic crap cd and very little janet.

on one hand i hope the record sells well so nipplegate can be securely behind us and the media can move on. on the other hand i hope it tanks and janet figures out that the majority of the public like her because she's janet and not because she can do what all the other poptart du jours are doing. by the way, if this is her attempt at proving she can do that flava, she hasn't proven anything. personally, i think the record is lame. the only good tracks are those where janet does janet. this should tell her something.

yeah, i'm salty. i loved damita jo and because of poor record sales and a bit of controversy she and virgin abandoned it. she neglected to do a tour to support the record and instead she went in the studio...and made this steaming pile of hot shit. thanks, j.

well, at least one good thing came from all of this. i was able to hear the record before buying it and now i can save 10 bucks by just buying the three tracks i like from itunes. i was hoping beyond hope it wouldn't come to that. i thought it might, but i truly was hoping it wouldn't.

I actually agree with most of your post. I ended up fast-forwarding through most of the tracks. I didn't become interested until ENJOY, which she should have released as a first single IMHO. I liked a few of the slow tracks, but most of the tracks were extremely boring.
There used to be a time when I would run out and get Janet's album the day that it was released. Not this time. I'm actually sad that I heard it over the interenet. Now I'm not interested in buying it. This will probably be the first Janet album that I won't buy. cry It seems like Janet has lost her passion and is just throwing anything out there and living off her name.

Janet, bring the hunger back. We need U to kick some ass. bawl

I disagree. I think the album is totally fresh and she's giving us some new sounds. Show Me, So Excited, and Get it Out Me are some bumpin dance tracks. And that's straight up what she was going for. Enjoy, yeah classic janet. She had to keep some of her old self around. Which is also evident in Take Care. I thinnk the only mistep is Love to Love, just can't get into it. I was on the fence about this one, but I've listened and just pre-ordered the CD.

You know it is starting to really see that Renee was the brains behind Janet & even alot of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.

sure they ripped off what they could remember from Prince, but when see all Janet's concepts and ideas are really from Renee, since he left they all have repeated themselves and really none of them have grown.

think about it

(I wrote this response in another thread, but it fits here, too--part of it does anyway.)

As part of the Janet brigade (lol), I appreciate both the positive and negative comments. I still haven't heard the whole cd, and I'm just going to wait until next week.

To tell you the truth, I have a little Damita Jo resentment. I also really loved that cd and was all hyped for the tour. So when it was cancelled, I was extremely disappointed, but I understand her reasoning: there was just too much negative, period. It seemed no matter what she did during the DJ era, something bad happened or was said. I even remember seeing this video where Janet trip up the stairs during the Wango Tango performance. During the BET awards, I remember that long scarf getting wrapped around her neck to where she had difficulty getting it loose in the wind tunnel. Just all kinds of stuff from the fans, to the critics, to some of the performances was just really negative.

So I, like you, am just happy that people seem to be really liking this cd, even though there are some who still don't. And maybe--just maybe the SB stuff will be a thing of the past--not that Janet is going to ever give-up being overtly sexual because I just think that's the way she is. Actually, it would more disingenuous of her to try to do something just to please all of her critics because I'm sure she's has read all of the remarks about people being bored with her breasts and her music. That said, 20 Y. O. may have been more of a creative stretch than a lot of people are giving her credit for- moving a little more closer to Urban. From what I've read, I think this is Janet's version of Confession of a Dance Floor in a sense except her idea of dance music is more urban-pop than electronic-pop. I don't think Janet will ever do an electronica cd or middle of the road electronica like Madonna's Confessions... I don't particular enjoy electronica anyway , so I'm not too disappointed about that although I'm rediscovering and enjoying the more moderate Confessions... .. However, Janet might move into more of jazz or even a urban vibe. Oh... also another fan mentioned to me that 20 Y.O. is also closer to "chill-out" house music--the type that's played in number of music lounges in California?

Whatever the case, I'm really happy that a number of you enjoy the cd. Now I'm really excited about it.

For what it's worth, I've heard 20 YO. Downloaded it this morning. And I think it's fucking awful. Makes Damita Jo look like the Mona Lisa. Janet needs to get that Renee back in her life pronto.

I gave it yet another whirl with better headphones thinking perhaps I was too hard on ol' girl. Didn't make a difference. I kept turning it off or fast fowarding.

I've accepted less than stellar material from her because it was either special to me in some quirky way or simply because I love(d) Ms. Janet.

But there is no quirky attraction and there is no love that can overshadow the fact that 90% of the album I either don't like or does nothing for me. This kills the potential of it even being a grower because:
a) I have no desire to play these songs again and;
b) I don't listen to radio or watch music video channels

And I no longer buy albums just because. With the exception of Prince, if I don't like it, I'm not buying it. $9-$12 can be used for something else.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I'd rather listen to Janet than Beyonce any day, but we're talking the difference between crap and turd surely. So Excited is ok, and yes, it should've been the first single, but the album is deadly deadly dull. And her voice is really thin too.

Anyone pick up on the nod to "Walk On The Wild Side" on Enjoy? And I like Enjoy too. It's one of the reasons I won't be using this disc as a frisbee or coaster.

You know what's missing from Janet's new work? Melody. Can you really say any of the songs on this new album has melodies that match with When I think of You, The Pleasure Principle, Love Will Never Do without You or If, just to name a few.

I agree.

My friend is not happy that they trumpeted this as a dance album and an homage to Control. He thinks B'Day--for all it's clunkiness--is a better dance album than 20YO. He may be right.

I've heard 4 of 5 songs from the album and have liked all but So Excited. I think her constant referencing of Control is going to throw people off. This album has nothing to do with that one.

I think all that nonsense about Control was all marketing, to win Janet her audience back and re-establish her as a credible artist. Problem is, they forgot to make a decent album.

To be honest I thought she was going to use the interludes to mix in some Control samples of sort, sort of like reminising on her first album, that would have been classic, but she rambles on, as usual, in her interludes.
