Half the songs I love (Spark, Northern Lad, Black-Dove, Jackie's Strength) and the other half I just find painful to listen to (She's Your Cocaine, iieee, Pandora's Aquarium, Liquid Diamonds, Hotel). It's not the lyrics, it's the melodies--they just rub me the wrong way. I can't explain it.
Is it the trip-hop beats, heavy electronics and full band arrangements too?

Is it the trip-hop beats, heavy electronics and full band arrangements too? It's definitely not the electronics, because I LOVE 'To Venus And Back'. That's my 2nd favorite Tori record after 'Little Earthquakes'. I dunno. Do you see any big difference between these sets of songs? Spark Black-Dove Raspberry Swirl Jackie's Strength Northern Lad iieee Liquid Diamonds She's Your Cocaine Hotel Playboy Mommy Pandora's Aquarium "Cruel" seems to be the only song that's in the middle. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either.

Nothing obvious is jumping out at me other than that the most trip-hoppy ones like 'iieee', 'Liquid Diamonds' and 'Hotel' are on your dislike list.

The songs that are really out there are on my shitlist. But "Datura" which tops all those in weirdness by 100, I love. Go figure.

Yeah, I'm not sure I see a pattern. Songs like "Jackie's Strength", "Northern Lad", "Black Dove", "Pandora's Aquarium" and "Playboy Mommy" are classic old-school Tori with more of a full band spin on them. They're really not that radical of a shift from what came before. But you seem as split on those as you do the other songs. I'm not sure I can detect a common thread in the melodies either. When it first came out, I remember feeling like it was too dense and dark. That's what I love about it now.

Ah. Understood. I thought about doing the same thing, but I'm guessing the Tori freaks will have it up online by tonight. It looks gorgeous, btw.

i was going to get it at my lunch break, but there isn't a Best Buy nearby - only a Borders, and a Tower Records... I figure it will be cheapest at Best Buy, so I guess I'll wait for the drive home this evening.
I'm going to be doing a write-up about it on my website, and will play from it heavily on my net radio starting tomorrow if anyone is interested (www.bluespaceradio.com) tonight, the plan is this: come home, shower, change into comfy clothes, get a bottle of wine, curl up with the booklet, put the set on my Bose, and lie back and listen to as much of the box set as I can

by the way, speaking of the net radio, if there are any orgers who want to contribute CD reviews to the site, please let me know. I've been spending so much time dealing w/ the playlist and adding music that I haven't had time for reviews, articles, or other blog entries. the focus is on new wave and related stuff, but also branches out into other areas like kate bush and tori amos, for example. it could be a regular thing, or an every once in a while contribution - shoot me an org note if interested.

What she had to say about pretty much my favorite song by anyone ever...
Tori said: B-sides used to very much be a big part of a release of work. For me they were never an afterthought. There was a time when you would buy a commercial single before the release of the record, and the B-sides would be included on these singles as bonus material. So in essence, besides the first single, B-sides would be one of the first things you heard from the new record. Therefore, there was a lot of effort put into making these moments sparkle. With the change in how people get their music, B-sides have become a thing of the past. But some of them were my favorites.
"Cooling", in retrospect, probably should have been on Boys For Pele, but I think maybe it was one of those things I wasn't ready to put on an album. You can't get away from the fact that when you put a song on an album it's out there for everyone to judge and critique. There have been certain songs, and I can't tell you why, that I just haven't wanted to expose. Maybe it's a little too close to the bone. But for whatever reason, you just feel as if you don't want everybody making a comment on it. On this box set we've included "Cooling" in its original form, which was recorded at the church in Delgany, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. "Cooling" has remained one of my personal favorites to play live. Maybe that is why there are so many incarnations of it. When I'm playing "Cooling" in a show you know it's either because I'm having a really tough day and it's the thing that's getting me through or I'm having the best time of my life and that's why I want to play "Cooling". I read you loud and clear, sister.

No, it's not for every song. Just select ones from each disc. But there's quite a bit of commentary once you factor in everything she says about the albums. I've been compiling a comprehensive Tori quote list and these are some of the best yet!
