Songs in the key of life

There are some topics concerning this album, but the search function isn't working so it seems.

I just bought it, I knew it was good, but not THAT good. I regret buying it so late in my life. Stevie, thank you for this one.

I know there are many people who like this album, so speak up, and tell me why you like it!

My favorite album of all time worship music I have done numerous threads on this masterpiece.

This album will soon be celebrating it's 30th anniversary. The original release date was October 9,1976 (although some people insist it came out several weeks earlier).

I think it still ranks pretty high on my list, although I still think Innervisions is stevie's best album. Nevertheless a great album and one of the best of the 70s and of all time. Very few albums have so many songs that feel like they could go on forever and you wouldn't get bored with them: I wish, Knocks Me off my feet, Summersoft, As, Another Star, All day sucker...all could've gone on twice as long if you ask me.

I actually just got the cd a few months ago. My parents had the vinyl version since it was released so I always considered that my copy, until I released I haven't played records in years. As great as SITKOL is, I think I still love Innervisions, Talking Book and even Fufillingness' First Finale more.

Aside from the hits on Songs, I absolutely love Ordinary Pain and Village Ghetto Land.

You guys should check out the rare video from 1976,where Stevie invited a bunch of journalists to a big farm to hear the album before it was officially released....

Motown pulled out all the stops in promoting this album lol it was like a mini-vacation for those journalists

I agree...Innervisions beats out Songs(by a hair). It doesn't get any better than "Living for the City", "Higher Ground" & "Don'tcha Worry 'Bout a Thing". But Songs is incredible. No one owned the 70s like Stevie.

SITKOL was the 1st album I ever bought from him. One of the baddest concept albums ever,,,,would love to hear the piano version of "If Its Magic".

But I prefer Talking Book. He REALLY poured his heart into that album.

disbelief You should be! Isn't it officially a crime not to own this record? It should be.

Songs in the Key of Life, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Innervisions all alternate as my favorite, but it's usually SITKOL. Talking Book is always #4, but it's still an outstanding work of art. Of course, so is Music of My Mind.

My favorite of Stevie's albums. A couple songs are not the best, but the high points are as good as anything he ever did (with the possible exception of Living For the City, my favorite)

It's so polished & perfect, but he hadn't crossed to far into pop-land yet, and the long songs don't ever really drag to me.

I just noticed that What's The Fuss is really similar to Black Man

eek Which ones?

I have to say I absolutely love all of the songs. If I were forced to name my ten favorites:

Sir Duke
I Wish
Knocks Me Off My Feet
Summer Soft
Isn't She Lovely
Ngiculela - Es Una Historia - I Am Singing
As
Saturn
Ebony Eyes
All Day Sucker

Taking those away, you're left with what is still a masterpiece:

1. Love's in Need of Love Today
2. Have a Talk with God
3. Village Ghetto Land
4. Contusion
5. Pastime Paradise
6. Ordinary Pain
7. Joy Inside My Tears
8. Black Man
9. If It's Magic
10. Another Star
11. Easy Goin' Evening

SITKOL = Best Double Album Ever (Bar None)

Nothing really bad, no, but I'm not crazy about If It's Magic, Easy Goin Evening, Saturn, or I Am Singing. Actually, Isn't She Lovely is a great song, but I'm kind of done with it now.

I agree.I love everything on the album, even the songs that critics thought were self-indulgent.It's one of the most diverse-sounding double albums ever.Stevie spent two years making this record, and he clearly poured his heart and soul into it.He's never been more focused and inspired. This album is like a massive Thanksgiving feast. The previous three albums were the appetizers, but this was the real deal lol

It's a really good album but Innervisions is better.

I actually think it's a little over-rated. boxed

Also, the cover has always reminded me of a colonoscopy.

IIRC, most complaints were about the length of songs like "Another Star," "As," and "Isn't She Lovely."

For real?

I thought the lengthy songs weren't an issue back in the 70's, considering how everybody releases LONG singles nod

is it true that Stevie lost his ability to 'smell' in a car accident?

Is that Stevie singing in 'As', the part where he appears to sound a little bit mad. Love that part.

Yeah, I think there was truck in front that skidded or something and some of its cargo fell off. Whatever, I know Stevie was in a coma for a while.

Poor guy, and to think he lost his eyesight through having too much oxygen pumped into his incubator, too. Can't see, can't smell, how unlucky can you get? confused
