I'd say yay although he's not necessarily the be all end all of early rock. I don't get quite the same thing out of Chuck as I do from listening to little richard, bo diddley, ike turner, bill haley, buddy holly, jerry lee lewis etc. etc. etc.In terms of what peformer did the most to define and exemplify guitar rock, yeah it's definitely chuck.

He definitely was the architect in many respects...I don't really know his catalogue well, but he made very catchy songs.
Keith Richards has stated that he was heavily influenced by Chuck's work. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

"If you were going to give rock & roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry".- John Lennon
The Beatles,The Stones and every other british band's setlist looked like a Chuck Berry tribute bands setlist. He is the sole reason they were able to get gigs. The lyrical flow and timing along with his guitar phrasing was/ is the blueprint for any successful Rock and Roll song.Everything coming from Keith Richard's guitar is Chuck's. ....and posing with a sweet 16-year-old white girl at that (I think he wrote a song abut it too:lol: )! Chuck used to have his entourage to help him bring his white groupies (ages 16-22) outside of the southern states for some wild sex parties.

Yes, I would call him the true king of rock n roll

Nay.
He didn't create R'n'R and people like Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and Elvis Presley were just as good. Berry has some great fucking songs, and a lot more songs that are stinkers and all sound very similar. What it comes down to is, I can't call him the king because of all the other great artists. That's just how I feel.

The stuff Bo, Buddy and even Valens was playing came AFTER Chuck..they were playing Chuck's riffs.Jerry Lee was rippin' from Little Richard and Fats Dominoe...and Elvis stole from everyone. Chuck is King and Little Richard is Prince! "I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either" ~ Jesse Owens

This man wrote some of the greatest and most seminal songs of all tme and with Maybellene started the car and sex metaphor, but in real life he was a parsimonious and perverted old git and unfortunately thats what he has gone in history for. I read a book about him and even the venom he had for little Richard is enough to make anyone cringe. A king yes but more an unpopular one. 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

Venom for Little Richard huh? For what reason?

Richard wanted Chuck to mix his Ding A Ling with his Tutti Frutti and Chuck wasn't trying for them to be the king and queen of rock and roll.
So Richard got Buddy Holly to ditch Peggy Sue for a few hours.. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page

Nay. There's not just one king -or queen -because everybody brought something different and important to the table. If we could splice the DNA of the greats together, we'd maybe have our king. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
