I just realized that I love Elton John and I'm listening to him now in fact. I was going to start a thread about him. Only his 70's output though. Naturally. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Wow i gotta totally disagree, but im not going to get into a whole debate. Unless you have heard every single Elton album, and unless your going to approach this album without thinking of "rocket man" or any of the hundred other hits Elton has had your not going to get it, and you will be disappointed. Also if you didnt like "songs from the west coast" or "Peachtree Road" your really not going to like it. I wonder when he's going to come out with the new hip hip album he's been wanting to do? Now that one is gonna go over well.

Well he is going to do it, even though Bernie Taupin kidded him about it saying "What a desperate attempt to fit in". Pharrel told him to also make sure they dont lose that great songwriting by doing this, which shows that even Pharrel knows how "wack" the current state of music is. He's doing a vocal on the new Scissor Sisters CD, and its alright.
Over the summer he did a duet with the Pet Shop Boys and its amazing. Maybe he should just do stuff on other artist cd's. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Not that there's anything wrong with it, but I always thought Captain Fantastic & Brown-Dirt Cowboy was his coming-out party on disc. Chock-full of more metaphors for ass-play than BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. Overall, his music really sucks ass (in a very non-homophobic way). I can only listen to "Your Song" without gagging test

You will enjoy every single minute of the show, trust me. I have seen Elton over 20 times through the years and he always delivers, expect at least 2 1/2 hours of just great musicianship. To say Elton John sucks is like saying Rihanna is a genius, its just a totally insane comment. I don't know his new album, but I saw him on TV last night with a (recent) live set and he was fucking amazing! There are people in pop music now who are praised as hell but could not deliver 20 % of the quality Elton put on the table in that show. Justin "please take me seriously" Timberlake would probably have to practice until he is 520 years old to play like this.

You better come equipped with earplugs. Something's happened in the last two years which no one has had the honesty to mention; Elton's voice has started to go. There was a concert of his broadcast last night on BBC1 and I had to turn it off. The years are starting to show. Stevie Wonder's voice is also starting to get a bit hit and miss now. Still, it's not quite MJ levels of vocal damage so the atmosphere and the sheer volume of the music might make for a good night out, but watching it from the distance of a television set he's starting to sound shaky.

Have not really heard any change in Eltons voice, outside of the obvious drop in his register, which was the result of his surgery to remove "nodes" on his vocal chords way back in 1988. Elton has had to adjust to that register, re learn his old material and make the adjustment. I know alot of people have problems adjusting to his vocal change, but its a natural thing. This is the reason why artists like Mariah blow their voices out, because they dont restructure their songs to hit their notes. To say Elton is not a good live performer/singer is just not true. If he thought for a second his voice was gone trust me, he would not do shows, he is quite the perfectionist. I mean at least he's not out there taking 150 bucks from people for a show and then lipsynching, like certain other artists..... so far, i've listened to the first 2 tracks. that's all i've had time for so far. but i liked them. feels like we're back to Songs From the West Coast territory. which is also what Peachtree Road was as well, but didn't have the same spark. this one does. The voice is certainly starting to sound a bit pub singerish in places now. Also, and this is just a sign of age, he's not quite the showman he used to be. Compare the Live Aid performance in 85 with any of his performances in the last decade. There's a big difference. I'm not criticising; just observing.

Which is 21 years ago, I mean Prince cant dance anymore how come that isnt a major issue. Also i feel many of Eltons 80's performances were pretty bad, he was in this "coke" haze, sure the voice went high, but shit happens, he is very fortunate after the sugery that he could sing. I think to compare Elton in 70's-80's to the Elton after surgery up till now is not fair, nor is it fair to jusdge any artist that way because you will always be let down in some way. To be honest when i saw Elton on the Fashion Rocks show he, along with BonJovi were the only ones not using Vocal tracks behind them to fill in notes that the artists couldnt hit, so if a 59 year old like Elton and a 45 year old like Jovi can hold their own a stage how come all the new jacks cant and have to resort to backing tracks, (and please dont say because they dance, because thats BULLSHIT!) I haven't liked his music since the 1970s. In the 1980s, I could tolerate stuff like "I'm Still Standing" but after that, he's been doing this boring slow shit and he really fucked up when he started doing Disney shit. What's worse is it actually sold well. Hell, back in the 1980s, we would have laughed an artist out of here for doing some Disney shit. Andy is a four letter word.

You will not be let down, I saw him on the last tour and was amazed on his energy, he still gives it all during the show, a true entertainer/performer/musician. Curious to see the set list for this tour, he has just added NYC shows for November, so im waiting on that. He will give you the "hits" but he also will pull out the rare album cuts that the longtime fans want to hear "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

His voice is deeper now than it was in the 70s, but it is also stronger. So unless his voice has drastically changed within the last 2 years, his voice still sounds great to me, just a little different.

I would say that over the last few years (Songs from the West Coast on), he has a new sort of affectation that can sometimes mar otherwise good songs. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

Just a quick note can we not have a post next week when the soundscan numbers come out and this record sells 50,000, saying "you see, hes done". When i can point out about 50+ albums that everyone praised here and sold shit. I think Elton is beyond numbers folks, lets get real, i think its pretty safe to say he's gonna stick with the music business. Funny you guys should mention Elton.Lately,I've been collecting all of his 70s albums.I recently bought his 1976 'Blue Moves' CD.Most of his classic albums have been remastered and contain bonus tracks.
I haven't bought the new one yet.I'm not certain if I wanna collect any of his recent albums.
