JT's Damn Girl is the best Prince song in 10 years

Damn Girl from Justin Timberlake's new CD is what Prince has forgot how to do.

It's a great, funky, melodic, pop song that's different enough to be interesting.

It's all the things I used to like about Prince.

It's a shame that it isn't Prince anymore that's doing it, but at least someone has picked up the torch.

why is that a shame? Prince been there done that, proved himself to the world, now its time for JT to show us what he got for the next decade or more.

yeah...there's no innovation if everytime someone talks about you they first reference someone elses work FIRST.

Justin NEVER gets any real credit for being Justin....he's too fake. He is a great imitator.

EVERY musical act is derivative. And Prince is probably the most derivative of recent history. Prince took from James Brown, Santana, Joni Mitchell, .etc

Doesn't make it bad though!

Thank you so much SoulAlive. I had to take a break from these boards because I am so sick of folks who continue to compare one of the greatest, most innovative artists of ALL TIME to these mildly talented (if that) new artists who are copying what he did DECADES ago!!!

Prince is a true artist and his music has evolved over the years. I've been listening to 3121, The Chocolate Invasion and The Slaughterhouse a lot lately. There are great songs on these albums. NOTHING that JT, Robin Thicke or OutKast are doing musically comes close to any of these albums, which were released 20 years after Prince's biggest commercial success! Just because Prince is moving forward while other folks have their feet stuck in the cement blocks of the 80s doesn't mean that he is not still creating great music 30 years into the game.

Who's even listening to the shit JT did on his last album? His new material will fade away like his last album and his NSync stuff. He hasn't written or performed any compelling material - ever. He might have a catchy tune here or there, but come on! His music is the epitome of trendy, mindless, pop throwaway music. It isn't even in the same category as ANYTHING that Prince has done. The Prince comparisons are both unmerited and insulting!

Why are we comparing a young man with everything to prove to a middle-aged man with nothing left to prove?

I'm sure JT's song is just fine for what it is. I'm sure JT's album is good for what it is.

Here, here. I haven't been litsening to much Prince lately, but the other day I stuck on 'The Rainbow Children' and no act today is close to touching what he does on that album (and it's not even the man's best). It's more original, innovative, fresh and funky than EVERYTHING else out there nowadays.

Music fans are crazy sometimes - such is the expectation of geniuses like Prince, they often catch a lot of criticism for albums that fail to live up to the lofty expectations of fans. Yet, on the flipside, you get some bubblegum popstar like Justin Timberlake (and hundreds of others - I'm looking at you Rihanna, Fartardo and Beyonce), idolised by 15 year old girls and few else, who puts out a sloppy, run-of-the-mill computer album masqeuarding as funk/soul/r&b and he is championed as some kind of saviour. Give over, Rover.

Imagine Timberlake even attempting to pull off something on The Rainbow Children with that weak arse voice and... err, little else actually. He plays a mean triangle, apparently.

Let's have some perspective, please.

Folk who came up with Sly, Stevie and Jimi were probably saying the same things about 1999 when it dropped.

I don't disagree with you about the comparisons -- Prince, by any measure, is a more complete and accomplished artist than Timberlake -- but every generation has their musical idols.

Exactly. So JT seems to imitate MJ and PRince? Is there anything wrong with that? MJ ripped from James Brown a shitload, and Prince ripped from not only James Brown, but you can VERY obviously spot traces of Little Richard, Santana and Jimi Hendrix.

Im not trying to say that JT is as great(or better) as MJ or Prince. Both MJ or Prince were rare type of talents in the sense that no one can touch what they did musically in the past(Especially Prince). But JT isnt exactly a no talent. He's a good singer, and y'all have to admit that his new album is a good, decent pop album.

So what if JT was in a boyband in the past? MJ was also, and the Jackson 5 had material that was WAY more bubblegum than NSYNCs stuff

It's totally different, though. Prince was a multi-instrumentalist, a phenomenom as a kid. Everyone knew it. Even if you didn't appreciate his music you knew the guy could play most peers off the stage. Timberlake doesn't even compare - the guy is primarily just an average singer from a corny boyband who now happens to work with some so-called 'R&B/Hip-Hop producers'.

If Justin Timberlake is this generation's 'musical idol' we may as well just give up now. Music is at an all-time low if you believe that to be correct.

True , just saying there's place for every kinda acts to appreciate instead of giving nominations to an act for carrying on a torch or whatever .
Even if Prince used influences from his former examples , i have not the slightest idea that he outplayed them or took over a torch . Imo , that is just a frase used in mindnumbing conclusions as a result from the commercial chart-statistics .

I just don't get the fascination with Justin Timberlake. hmm To me, he's just like every other video "artist" out there these days. confused I'll just never understand the hype. bored

And to newskin69 with this quote:

"So JT seems to imitate MJ and PRince? Is there anything wrong with that? MJ ripped from James Brown a shitload, and Prince ripped from not only James Brown, but you can VERY obviously spot traces of Little Richard, Santana and Jimi Hendrix."

That was a long time ago though. neutral It's 20 years AFTER that now, and back then it was fresh, new, and had interesting new twists to it even though it was derivative. But now, there comes a point when things become way too diluted if that's all anyone can do after all these years. Now, it's so-and-so ripping off this person, who ripped off that person, who ripped off THAT person, and so on. lol It's just not even interesting anymore to me when it gets that far.

I'm seriously just waiting for someone to actually do something new . A sound that's never been done before. I doubt that day will come soon. lol And if anyone knows anyone fitting this description, please direct me to them now! nod

Again, you're preaching to the choir on the comparisons. All I'm saying is that one generation's genius is another's goofball.

BTW, a lot of folk might have said the same thing about MJ when he dropped Off The Wall. They were wrong, we might be right. But it's all about perspective.

If Justin Timberlake is this generation's 'musical idol' we may as well just give up now. Music is at an all-time low if you believe that to be correct.
[Edited 9/14/06 11:42am]

It's not about what I believe. I'm over the hill as far as the music industry is concerned.

What I'm saying is that this argument is cyclical. Longtime jazz heads did and DO look at rock artists with a certain disdain. People who grew up with Sinatra scoffed at Elvis and the Beatles. Beatles heads scoffed at the superstars of the 80's. Now, we scoff at the Timberlakes of the world.

Timberlake IS a musical idol now. Regardless of whether we like him. So music, I guess, IS at an all-time low.

And namepeace...I don't know.....my parents BOUGHT Michael and Prince for their own music collection. I don't know if this is necessarily a generational thing. I really don't see the younger folks thinking Justin is some sort of "genius" vs just another Usher.

Also...you're talking about a change in musically STYLES....Beatles and Elvis...different. Justin is just rehashing. That's very different from Sintra and Elvis
