Scissor Sisters - Ta Dah

I must admit, this album has really surprised me.

As much as I liked their debut, there was a number of very generic sounding songs on it which although I grew to love, I was always wondering whether or not they'd be a one CD wonder. What'd be the point, I wondered, of releasing a second CD if it was only more of the same?

Fortunately, Ta Dah is a total surprise.

For starters, it's a lot more eclectic - even Prince would be impressed by the different sounds coming from this disc and talking of Prince, it's now easy to see how Prince has influenced Jake Shears music writing as he mentioned in Attitude's top 100 gay albums where he mentioned Controversy. There's a very Controversy era sounding tune by the name of 'Ooh', which does sound like it ought to be a cover version of an unreleased 1981 Prince song.
Of course, there's the usual Elton John sounding songs, but these are eclipsed by songs that take the Scissor Sisters in a completely new direction. 'I Can't Decide' sounds like it's come straight from 1920s New Orleans, 'Transistor' not only sounds like David Bowie has joined them for a quick trip into space, but to my ears sounds oddly reminiscent of Wendy and Lisa's 'Why Wait For Heaven?'.
There are great moments scattered throughout the album, some instant and some only hitting you after a few listens. The chorus of 'Might Tell You Tonight' is truly beautiful and wonderfully romantic - definitely a contender for a newlyweds first dance. And the oddly named 'Paul McCartney' not only sounds nothing like either him, nor The Beatles, nor does it even mention either him or them, but does however sound like something Kool and the Gang may have come up with in their prime.

So all in all, a complete surprise and I do wish that Prince would release albums that sound this fresh and fun. If you liked their last CD, you'll love this and if you weren't overly keen on their last one, maybe this one will draw you in - they've definitely stepped up a gear and this is no 'difficult second album', it's like a variety pack of 70s/80s influenced music that still manages to sound contemporary. And it's great to see real music by real musicians as Prince himself likes.

It's going to take a little getting use to for me. I hear they do a great live show, so maybe that's the angle for the new stuff.

I'm gonna give Scissor Sisters another go. They did nothing for me the first time, but I'm in the mood for something new and fun.
