I'm just wondering in light of some of the threads and articles that have been posted. Can we truly accept music by new artists on its own terms without comparing it to other music that preceded it? I don't know. It's hard for me at times, but I have grown to love just listening to stimulating music, even if sometimes it does rip off my favorite artists.

I could name several newer artists who are making derivative music that I buy simply because I like the grooves.

How about y'all?

Well, I can, if it rocks. There's gonna be a hint of familiarity that comes across in the artists' influences. But there's a way to do it.

Half of The Love Below smacks of Prince and George Clinton. But I like that half.

"Rock Your Body" from Justified is JT's attempt to mimic Off The Wall. "Nothin' Else" from the same album is a Stevie ripoff that is good for the ears.

The more you learn about music the harder it is to simply enjoy. I had to learn to like Lenny Kravitz when he came out because I knew I wasn't supposed to respect him.

My sister taught me that sometimes good music doesn't have to be totally innovative. It just has to be good and true, and I can't deny that Lenny does what comes naturally.

It doesn't necessary have to be funk. It can be some type of new music that hasn't been invented yet. Whatever it is though, it needs to be danceable. Dance music should never die. It should always be around in some form or fashion but it's not around today, which is fucking rediculous. In the past, there has been disco, funk, and house. What's next? When is the new style coming? This trance shit don't cut it and this hip hop shit sure as hell ain't suitable for no dancefloor.

well, John Mayers album can be compared to a lot of music and styles.. and there's a reason for it.. he was inspired by it.. but he isn't stealing someone style.. it's his own music coming out of him in his own interpretation..

i can't handle all that shit of comparing.. you fall in that format, you'll always be doing it and it seems like it creates a wall for you to enjoy any music in the future..

I enjoy alot of new music but I'm kinda picky with it I know

I'm still trying to find more artists that are that "complete package"
but really for most new artists my expectations are kinda low

You can't help but compare at times but that shouldn't take away from appreciating new music for what it is.

Sounds like...I don't care,that doesn't mean I'll have the same respect that I have 4 Prince or other great artists,I'll just enjoy the tune.

Remember when Jamiroquai came out and he was compared 2 Stevie for years!!!
Nowadays he is a respected artist with a great career.
And he has his own sound nobody else has these days.

I enjoy several new artists, from Kanye West to Alicia Keyes, but I know in the next 10 years most of them will be forgotten, due to lack of originality and indiviualism.

So, SO difficult for me not to compare most of the time.

But yeah, there are some new bands out there that I really like and that have their own sound (although not entirely ).

For example, I'm really getting into Kasabian's new album, Empire.





Although they are often compared to Oasis, which makes me gag, I still like them. Nothing brilliant, but there are a few really, REALLY good tracks on this album.
