It's cool. The only thing I've seen/heard from his latest album though is a promo video of he and what looks like his niece walking around in a park. I watched the live at Wembley 1989 home video yesterday. Not messing with Alexander O'Neal's Wembley video of same year but it's nice.

Essence said: Actually I read an article recently stating that Luther, Rahsaan Patterson, Tevin Campbell etc can't get modern day public success due to their sexual preferences as soul men.
Elton John suffered the same fate when he came out...his sales took a nose dive. Look at him now! As far as Tevin Campbell being gay? Has he actually said that? Has he come out? Essence, u need 2 back that one up with some facts! I think in the long run, one's sexual orientation will only turn u off 2 a very slim minority. If ur product is good, it will sell...hey, controversy also sells! |

I couldn't care less if Tevin sees himself as gay or not, he was caught in a compromising situation hence his mention in the article. I didn't write the article, it basically just focussed on the need for R&B/Soul singers stereotypically to be a macho flood of testosterone fuelled heterosexuality.

i'm thinking of seeing the video from one of his shows live. I have two videos of his concerts. Both feature he and another male vocalist with two female vocalists in the forefront. Plenty of light hearted banter and pairing off. It's all very glitzy and glamorous, plenty of sequined suits and dresses. He pays massive amount for the outfits, really busts the bank, to put on a spectacle.

I don't know much about Luther's sexual preferences.
I believe he had a thing for Lisa Fischer. I have seen him with his arm around females backstage. He has held my hand...twice!!! (sigh)!!! He has never "come out" as they say like Elton J. But for those who say he is gay...How was it? Did U watch or did U participate? That's the way I feel about ALL rumors. They are just that... unless U WERE THERE...or maybe U have a video? But again it's all about the music... and it is beautiful. Luther has a beautiful heart. One time when the "dignitaries" had not shown up for the special seats up front, he refused to start the show until they filled those seats with paying fans. He is just so nice. As far as difficulties with opening acts...they should have known that they were "opening acts". Most of them were relatively new compared to Luther's 20 years and many platinum albums. Though I wanted to see the other acts...I PAID to hear Luther! - So...how's everybody doing?

Oh yes, there was a widely circulated rumor that
Luther had died last year. Even his close friends, Ashford and Simpson and Dion Warwick believed it because they heard it on radio/news. They were frantic and finally got in touch with him. Dion said..."I heard U were dead, honey." Luther said, "I just heard that." On a television interview, Luther was visibly distressed by all the rumors and just shook his head and said..."I did not die." In answer to the question about his sexuality, he said, "I won't even dignify that question with a response." Rumors...rumors...rumors So...how's everybody doing?

SensualMelody said: Sometimes when Luther sings "If Only For One Night" live,
he will add a little something like: Let me take you home I wanna keep you safe and warm (like a baby)/added (I'm fanning now like a church/lady) Let me hold you near And ease away your fears It would be so nice If only for one nignt (now I'm sayin' yes!!!) (My husband's looking at me now like he's asking Hey, do you want him or me?) - That is SO true! Luther in live performances really had that "thing" in his voice that had a lot of men looking at their wives and girlfriends like "and what the hell am I ? Chopped liver, or what?!?

DavidEye said: Hey,did anybody mention his 1982 hit "Bad Boy/Having A Party"? That song was da bomb back then!
And to that I say AMEN and GOOD EVENIN'! I can hardly remember a time back in the day when that song wouldn't set people's toes to tapping and fingers snapping! Also, on the "supporting player" tip, a friend of mine recently played Chaka Kahn's "Papillon/Hot Butterflies" at a house party, and lo and behold, if I didn't hear Mr. Luther himself on bacrkound vocals...outsinging Cissy Houston! That man has been a part of some great r&B moments, for real!

WoW! I've truly enjoyed reading this thread...thanks, everyone! And, SensualMelody, you love Luther Vandross...I'll never forget that fact...lol
All of Luther's greatest hits have been mentioned, but another song that I adore is one in which Luther sings a duet with dancer/actor Gregrory Hines titled "There's Nothing Better Than Love"...it's on GH's self-titled album released in 1988. It's very nice.

Oh, and, has anyone ever enjoyed eating "Luther" Burgers? Fun! Instead of burger buns you eat the pattie(beef/veggie) between 2 jelly-filled donuts!...lol...

"Never Too Much" is an 80's soul classic.
He's coming to the UK this fall for a tour. Has anyone seen one of his shows recently. Is it worth going? Knowing my luck it will probably clash with the Prince gig (not that there is anything confirmed yet).

Then when the concert is over, they are saying..."I did not pay enough! I feel like I owe the man some more!!" The performane is a well choreographed performance... not a run-of-the-mill concert. His voice and emotional expression reaches inside and caresses your heart and soul. You will be elated!... - So...how's everybody doing?

There is not another voice on the planet like Luther's. His concert at Wembley is one of my favorite concert films. I am never disappointed seeing him perform live. My favorite Luther Vandross song of all time is "You Stopped Lovin' Me" off his first album. My other favorites are:
So Amazing Make Me A Believer Wait For Love Give Me The Reason There's Nothing Better Than Love For You To Love Sometimes It's Only Love God Bless Luther and well wishes for a speedy recovery.
