Having fans has nothing to do with musical importance. If that's the case then Britney and Puff Daddy are some of the most important musical artists of this generation.

the People make you Important.Britney is to Her Generation what Madonna was to Her's in some ways.as for Puffy: well in the Rap Game you usually don't have too long to matter&this Cat is 10 Years deep&Has worked with Jodecci,Mary J.Bliege,etc..SUccessful Record Company&a Artist. He has Had Quincy Jones&Babyface sing His praises.and though I Can't Stand what He Represents in Music you can't deny His Impact thus far.

Culture Club did Have Jams like "Time CLock of the Heart",DO you really wanna Hurt Me"?,Karma Chamelon,"Miss Me Blind",etc... they had a Good Little run.I Give Duran Duran the Edge for the fact they Up-dated there Sound in 86&were able to hang on a little while longer overall.

You asked about musical importance. None of the above have that because they have no clear musical skills.

Good Afternoon Orgers,

I liked both groups in the 80's. Duran Duran had some nice catchy pop songs with nice bass riffs. "Rio" is my favorite DD track. That bass riff kicked hard on that one. I also liked "Planet Earth".

Now, I really loved Culture Club featuring Boy George. I still think their 1983 album COLOUR BY NUMBERS is one of the best pop albums of the 80's. Nice arrangements, nice catchy songs and great singing from Boy George. Guest vocalist Helen Terry sings her behind on "Church Of The Posion Mind". Hey BTW, if you listen to that song you will hear echoes of Stevie Wonder's Uptight. That was the group's way of paying tribute to Stevie and Motown music. Boy George had a nice voice...you can hear a Smokey Robinson and Gladys Knight influence in his singing.

I also dug "Mistake No. 3" from the WAKING UP WITH THE HOUSE ON FIRE album. But my absoulute favorite jam by them is "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" which was a R&B and pop hit in 1983. It went to number #2 on the pop chart and number #19 on the R&B chart.

DURAN DURAN! D2! DD!

What I loved about these guys is that they played their instruments and played them well.

John Taylor playes a funk bass like you would not believe! Roger was tight on the drums and looked super cool playing them too! Simon voice is super unique and full of emotion, proof you don't have to sound all smooth to sing great in a pop band. ANd much props too Nick for the amazing synth work and Andy for the rock edge.

They were innovative as well. They moved through alot of styles and themes very quickly much like Prince. The New Romantic thing was thier bitch! Spandau looked like bad dress pattern catalog models!

Plus, Duran as a band was inspired by Barbarella like you know who! Taking the name from one of the characters from the movie.

Their whole thing was mixing Punk with dance music such as Disco, Funk and early electronic dance music. They succceeded and basically invented a new sub-genre to New Wave if not pushed it ahead!

So don't say their not important, they had their part in the Evolution of Rock N' Roll whether you dig it or not! Back in the day when you HAD to know how sing and play and create good music!

I love every period from the New Romantic days of Girls On Film to the Brazil tropical thing, to the Japanese GQ days of Seven and the Ragged Tiger to the leather pre-Cyberpunk/Mad Max of Wild Boys to the refined Euro FUNK of Notorious! Plus their early nineties work was really cool too.

All the original members are rejoined to unleash the music again! Check them at http://www.duranduran.com ! Check out their Flash intro song, has a Funk flavor!

They still ROCK!

i will say culture club only since i love the guy's voice. too bad his sex choice and personal habits do interfere in the way. George is seen as a gay guy who is annoying, doesn't have hits and works in clubs and gets kicked out of them too. "sigh:

Chewy where are you??? I know he loves Duran Duran too. And, Purplmusik, and Retrodude. We know what's up.

Nick Rhodes is a SYNTH GOD and Simon LeBon has great lyrics and so much passion in his voice.

The Wild Boys is a Kick Ass song. Still stands up today. So does A View to a Kill. This Brilliance cannot be duplicated. I hope to follow in their footsteps. I Can't wait to hear the new stuff.

what does someone's "sex choice " have to do with his talent, moron, besides this it's ironic, coming from a pedophile worshipper.

Gotta agree with Jnoel on that one. If you're going to disqualify someone on sexual preference alone your music collection will dwindle. Believe that.

As to the question, I don't know what the "versus" thing has to do with it. Some may like both, since you really don't have to choose. Personally, I like Culture Club for the dance/r&b/pop they did back in the 80s, although I don't own anything by them. Helen Terry had one damn powerful voice too.

that is true you won't have much of a Music Collection if Based on Sexual Preference.I got a Friend in the Biz who just Name dropped a ton of folks&My Mouth still hasn't gotten the flys out from all the Names.but anyway that isn't Important.as for Picking: well back in the day it was always about Competition Between these Two.Tiger Beat among other Mags always asked who Folks thought was Better between the two.I Like them Both.but it's Healthy to Debate&see where folks stand on these Two Bands.it's all in Fun in a Battle.you can't at any point of Your life have enjoyed Prince's Work&Not think of a battle because that Guy has always been about that.be it Him comparing Himself up Versus others or Versus His OwnSelf.it's Healthy.

Culture Club doesn't even register with me.I still listen to D2 and am awaiting their new cd.They were/ae a very influential band and created their own sound and look ,as well as played their own instruments. They were not just a boy band.If they hadn't looked the way they did I think they would've gotten more credit for being musicians. And ,as some have mentioned,John Taylor had some bas riffs that were uite unique.I learned to play what I know on the bass from dissecting Prince's,John Taylor's,and sting' riffs.Even Meshell has mentioned how shewas influenced by those riffs. Also,Simon added the perfct theatrics and glamour to the sounds John and Nick developed.I love d2.I love alot of their stuff, but the eotional king song by them, for me,is "the chauffeur".d2,baby!!

Now I say Culture Club by a mile. Boy George was one of the most underrated vocalist of the 80's. He actually really could sing. Going back to listen to their music now is like a breath of fresh air. They released a couple of new tunes in the late 90's that I thought were awesome (Love Voodoo, and I Just Wanna Be Loved). Truely a great band in their own right.
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.

Ummm, standards such as Tiger Beat isn't always a good thing. confuse lol

And music is not a sport, so I don't get the "battle" aspect of it, because you don't have to choose - unless you're talking about something like a Desert Island Discs sort of list. Where you might set up a situation where your house is hypothetically burning and you have to choose which music to save.wink I enjoy Prince work and never even envision a musical "battle". Prince talks shit because he's cocky. And he's got it like that!

PS, don't get me wrong, debating music itself isn't what I'm talking about. But pitting one against the other is more like sports, and music is an artistic endeavor, not competition - there are blurry lines. I like apples like "Good Times, Bad Times" by Led Zeppelin just as much as I like oranges like "Hot Stuff by the Stones.

Easily DD, no contest. Durans last 2 CDS, MEDDAZZALAND and 2000's POP TRASH were one of the best CDS of their careers. Now Duran has gotten the rest of the original members back and is doing a world tour in 2003, and have finished up a CD with Producer Nile Rodgers that will be out in 2003 also.
