I'll check that out. I haven't heard anything classified as strictly Gypsy. I've heard this by Beirut:

it's more of a mix of folk and Balkan. I do like is this band called Reptile Palace Orchestra. I guess it's gypsy, rock, funk, and Balkan combined. I found them on myspace music a few months ago. You should check out their song "Sweet Girl" smile They're not strictly Gypsy, but you may like them

...Django Reinhardt

And, a noted successor to all things Django would be gypsy disciple Bireli Lagrene.

BL's "Gypsy Project."

Aah, thanks for the reminder.

The The Romane/Stochelo Rosenberg Duo jammed with us in France...

...2 fantastic guitarists that play tunes in the Django Reinhardt style.

Stochelo Rosenberg...

...plays with Bireli Lagrene on this one.

The best way to do it is see the movie. It's one of my all-time favorites. Absolutely fascinating (it's a documentary about gypsy music, just watching them play and dance the whole movie, from Europe, Middle East, India, all over...)

Great topic, some days I'm not willing to listen to anything but Gypsy music! My favorite bands are from Romania: Taraf de Haidouks (who perform in the film Latcho Drom) and Fanfare Ciocarlia. The sound of the Taraf is, as far as I know, more "traditionally gypsy", with violins, cymbaloms, accordions and flute- dig that Moldavian flute! music All their songs have a typical Romanian/Moldavian flavor, the best albums to start with are "continuing adventures of taraf de haidouks" (incl dvd and live cd and lots of bonus material) and "honourable brigands..."
Fanfare Ciocarlia's sound is horn-driven, they are very different from the Taraf, but also very good. "Baro Biao-World Wide Wedding" is my favorite album of theirs.

Then there's the band Ando Drom from Hungary. Get the album "Phari Mamo", the singer Monica Mitsou shines all over the album. Btw, her voice was featured in one of Tony Gatlif's films (I need to watch them all, dammit). Great rhythms and m,y favorite female singer.

The last Gypsy album I got was "The gypsy cymbalom" by Kalman Balogh, maybe the best-known cymbalom player at least in Hungary. It's beautiful music, and it showed me for the first time what a great instrument the cymbalom is.

Thank you!!! I'm trying to learn to play violin in that style, so I'm very interested in hearing the gypsy fiddle, but I also need to get familiar with the overall sound, tonalities, rhythms, EVERYTHING. I'm writing down all those names you gave me.

His name definitely keeps coming up. nod

I'm guessing you've already checked into the violinist who played a bit with him...

...Stéphane Grappelli (not 100% locked into Gypsy music but a good player nonetheless)

I went back to my Latcho Drom disc today and played the Taraf de Haidouks songs. That is EXACTLY what I'm looking for! Balada Conducatorolui...so haunting, mesmerizing! Also features a different way of playing violin than I've ever heard -- that slow grinding the bow into the string sound.
