Your Fave Obscure Soul Sirens? Its really beyond me how this woman never got a chance in the industry,,,
She was one of the REALLY most 'genuine' soul sirens. I could fearlessly rank her in the same breath as Aretha, Gladys, Chaka and Patti. Record labels not knowing what to do with her must the main reason why she vanished without a trace.

I don`t know how obscure she is, but i`ve mentioned her several times here, without a single respond.

Who is she? She`s a british singer, who released a now unknown album called "Women held up half the sky" in the late 80s, and a few albums after that. She still records... My favorite song from her is her cover of Gladys Knight and the Pips` "Nobody but you" Here`s a short clip: http://www.artistdirect.c...src=search Enjoy

Not sure if she's necessarily soul (more jazz, pop, and a mix of everything I guess) but I love her:

I'd put her in the Jazz camp and she's got a great voice. Her style is influenced a lot by the male vocalist Little Jimmy Scott. Started to say, "Obscure?". Then I thought that if you hadn't included pics some may have thought you were referring to the Heart guitarist. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. But I like Heart's Nancy Wilson as well. Although, I suppose she'd be TOTALLY wrong for this thread. Nancy Wilson is from the Dinah Washington school. I hear Little Jimmy Scott, but QUEENIE was the one behind Nancy's influence.

From a January 2003 interview... JEFFREY BROWN: I often see you referred to as one of the last greats of the golden era of singers. Who did you learn from, who did you listen to? NANCY WILSON: My father was the one who really listened to the recordings. So my early influences were male, it was Billy Eckstein, Nat Cole, and Little Jimmy Scott. Then I found Sarah, I was around 15. JEFFREY BROWN: Sarah Vaughn -- NANCY WILSON: Sarah Vaughn, the brilliance of that voice. The humor Diana Washington. The sound is Jimmy Scott. And then the overall picture, Lena Horne. And I never saw any of these people perform at 15. But I heard them on recording, and I saw their pictures, and I knew who they were. And I just loved the music, I loved the songs. ...http://www.pbs.org/newsho...01-07.html tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Intersting!!!
Speaking of Dinah, she resented Nancy early in her career(Becoz of how Downbeat and other magazines saying that she would snatch her crown).
