According to today's Variety, Alcon Entertainment is remaking the 1987 classic Can't Buy Me Love, which starred Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson. The new version will star Nick Cannon (Nickelodeon's The Nick Cannon Show) and Christina Milian, Def Soul recording artist and host of MTV's Wannabe – she'll also be seen in Ice Cube's forthcoming Torque.


Actress-turned-filmmaker Troy Beyer (Let's Talk About Sex, Robert Townsend's B*A*P*S) will direct the film from her own screenplay.

The original film told the story of nerdy kid named Ronny who is secretly in love with Cindy, a popular cheerleader. Cindy finds herself in desperate need of cash, and Ronny seems to be her only hope. But he'll only help if she agrees to temporarily pose as his girlfriend in hopes that her popularity will rub off on him. Needless to say, things don't exactly go according to plan. Cindy ends up falling for Ronny, but he's so obsessed with his newfound popularity that he doesn't even notice.

Alcon co-pres Andrew Kosove says, "Whenever you do a remake, you've got to justify why... the appeal was taking a charming original story, and plugging in a director whose first film showed a lot of potential. But the most exciting thing was the idea of getting Nick and Christina as a way for a new young audience to fall in love with the story."

Shooting on the new Can't Buy Me Love (it's unclear if the film will retain its original title) gets underway on October 9th. The picture is set for a Fall 2003 release by Warner Bros.
