Best of the Year So Far...

My two favorite albums of the year so far came out within a week of each other and both are from great artists who had seemed to have petered out recently.

Yo La Tengo's newest is a real change up in their style, much more song-oriented with more chord changes and less endless grooving. And the singing actually verges on beautiful rather than just part of the mix.

Basement Jaxx's newest combines ragga, house, crazy ass Balkan rhythms and Bernard Hermann in a way that turns all the old musty dance music cliches on their head. It's a little overwhelming how genius it is. Every track has a moment of "what the hell did I just hear"?

It's been kind of so-so year for great music so far, but these are both classics I'll be listening to for years.

I'll be picking up the Yo La Tengo album next week - I'd pick it up today, but I don't seem to be able to make it out of the office. I've been a big fan of them for years, but I haven't been too thrilled by their recent records either. Nice to hear that this is a return to form.

I've never heard anything by Basement Jaxx, but your description makes me want to hear this record.

My favourite records of the year so far are:

Dylan's Modern Times - predictable choice, I suppose - this record has been a daily obsession with me so far, and it provides everything one could possibly have hoped for from a Dylan record at this point.

Scott Walker's The Drift - The most harsh and uncompromising record I've heard this year.

The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely - This hasn't hasn't thrilled me quite as much as last year's The Sunset Tree, which had a much more up-tempo pop sound, but I still love it lots.

There are new Pernice Brothers, Hold Steady and Decemberists albums on the horizon, and I have high hopes for those as well.

I wonder how that new John Legend joint that comes out on October 24th is going sound?

My album of the year, as of September, is Pearl Jam Pearl Jam. Probably would make my top 10 of the 2000s, as well...

Ooh, new Pernice? I hadn't heard. I'm really surprised the Hold Steady hasn't leaked yet.

I really didn't get into Get Lonely, the melodies just didn't stick for me.

October 3rd is the release date, but if you pre-order here before Sept 22 you'll receive a bonus cd, autographed by Joe Pernice, of demos and remixes.

I've been shying away from that Primal Scream album because it seemed to be taking quite a critical beating. hmmm Maybe I'll have to give it a chance. I'd heard that they're back to doing Stones-style rock these days.

I'm hearing good reports on them from folks on the Gov't Mule list. They're even on the bill in a few instances. I might give 'em a whirl.

This album has really blown me away, and not just because it automatically makes you think of Sabbath, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rush, etc. I feel like they really have some depth and are not just a "retro" band. nod They are a trio from Australia, and I'd KILL to see them live. headbang They are pretty heavy, almost verging on metal. It's good to have a relatively newer band around like that these days.

Ok, you can all tell that I'll NEVER be a writer in any way, shape, or form. err I wrote all that before coffee though. lurking

This has been a very solid year for music thus far, alot of great releases. I would have to say my favorite has been Bob Dylan's "Modern Times" but I'd need to really sit down and look over the past year and come up w/ a list. That's something to do at the end of the year smile
