A childhood memory... biggrin

We were very excited about the whole affair, but were greatly disappointed by Isaac Hayes doing such a short set. The BarKays were totally freaky-funky in that sweat-drenching blakrock way, but that went over everybody's head...even my nappy lil 'fro.

Great music and some pretty funny Richard Pryor segments.

Plus interesting man-on-the-street interviews with Ted Lange (Mr. Love Boat tryin' to act hard), Raymond Allen (Woodrow on Sanford & Son) and one of The White Shadow kids (can't remember which one).

I loved it. I always heard about as a kid in the 80's. I would be
like what. I never knew wattstax to come to the theatre. In 2004, at a
small theatre that shows independent films i took my future wife to see
wattstax one weekend there. We laughed our asses off. Being a fan of the
barkays just made me enjoy seeing there performance in the film even more
with those funky threads. Richard Pryor unknown at the time was hilarious.
I liked it so much that i ordered it from the stax museum in memphis later
on in the year when it came available. This is classic. This was the way
blacks told there story in the 70's. Too bad stax went through so much legal
trouble that the film never got to see the light of day and promote all that
talent in the film like the staple singers, rufus thomas, albert king, emotions,
barkays, etc. I almost forgot about the late great johnny taylor performing
jody. That was tight with the horn section.

Great film. The commentary is just as valuable as the music. It points out how we're still going through the same struggles that our prvious generation did. My fave performances are The Barkays 'Son of Shaft' , and The Emotions ( the song they sang in the church)
A happy face, A Thumpin Bass, For A Lovin' Race. PEACE.

Great show. What bothers me that there is 100's of items like this that will NEVER see the light of day. What a waste.

The film is done documentay style so interspersed with the musical performances are man-on-the-street type interviews.
Ted was someone who was interviewed.

As somebody "supposedly" from the ghetto? lol

I'm only assuming, consider how you and Dansa were tap dancing on his ass earlier(for acting up) lol

Yeah, that's how it looked. And maybe he was.
It's a bit of a time warp that trips you up because in reality he didn't do his bit on The Love Boat until '77.

confuse But still when you see Street Ted in the movie you think, "Wait a minute, that's Isaac from The Love Boat!" lol
