Clapton:
I have to agree that he has been 'taking the easy way out' for a LONG TIME. Unlike lets say, BB King, who I watched a dvd of a few weeks back taken from 2000, and it is obvious that he is STILL pushing himself to be more creative in his lead playing. Another problem with Eric is that his set list has been more or less the same for the last 30 odd years. We have heard those 'standard' solo's too many times.

Malmsteen:
He likes how he plays. He is NOT gonna change that. The material lacking quality is another problem.

Joe Perry.

I have to agree that Joe's playing has gone into recession, as far a lead playing. I always thought of him a 'riff master' who could solo 'ok'anyway.

He doesn't seem to play rhythm at all - just sort of noodles his way through every song. Everything kinda sounds the same now...A local jazz guitarist who used to come in the music store I worked in felt that Santana hadn't improved since the '70s.

I had this conversation with a friend the other day while we were discussing the upcoming Jeff Beck concert.

Of The Yardbirds' Big 3 (Beck, Clapton & Page), Jeff Beck has shown the most progress as a guitarist hands down.
In Clapton's defense, he has always been an evangelist for the Blues.
To his credit, he's *generally been willing to give credit where credit is due regarding his influences.

*I still have a question about the tune Strange Brew which sounds very similar to an Albert King tune I can't name at the moment.

This is in direct opposition to another of his Yardbirds compadres who will remain nameless.
Let's just say we'll turn the PAGE on that issue.

While I love old Van Halen, Eddie can be added to this list. Now if there was a point made about how much money these artists have in comparison to how they play the same thing, that would be interesting.

Im gonna say for one - Steve Vai.....Dude still sounds the same as he did in 1984.

Hendrix Rocks !! thumbs up! Just listen to Electric Ladyland (1983 a merman I should turn to be) then skip to Voodoo Chile..... cool

Malmsteem is a great player who needs a "creativity" injection.

Vito brata (White lion).....Same old same old through every album

and lots more - I suppose it is what you want and like from a Guitarist that decides the answer to some degree - I still think Clapton, contrary to many comments, is still a great player. He also did experiment later on in his career (August / Journeyman) but that was more with his sound - Listen to the Wah Wah on Breaking Point and Bad Love (Journeyman) and the Guitar solo which I still think is a Claptonised "Purple Rain" on Holy Mother (August).
