2. Public Enemy Lots of other groups have been great, but those are easily the greatest two IMO. Prolly couldn't disagree. Run-DMC set the bar for everyone. And then PE made two of the best albums of any genre of the last 20 years. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

As for greatest rap duo ever: 1. OutKast 2. Kid 'N Play 3. EPMD 4. BlackSheep 5. Nice & Smooth Salt-N-Pepa are the greatest female rap group of all-time. [Edited 9/6/06 16:38pm] Leave rap alone it is not for you how can you say Kid N Play Black Sheep over Mobb Deep who released three classic LP, and then you have Kid N Play over EPMD when they were just Herbie Luv Bug's male version of Salt N pepa. Listen to r&b, funk, rock just leave hip hop alone it aint for you

Hell, even 2pac & Jay-Z destory their sorry ass for being FAKE! As Jay-Z said: You a ballerina, I seen ya! 2. I can agree that the order isn't fair. But Kid 'N Play are a top 5 best. All 3 of their career albums were clean, but funky party music. Their flow were tight & they could dance! That's my opinion. Get over it!!

Well, SoulScrybe, welcome to the Org. And I happen to agree with you, although you gave away your choice with your avatar. IMHO, to be eligible, a group would have to have at least two MCs or rhyming DJs in the group. Keeping that in mind and going in chronological order . . . Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five Run-DMC: The quintessential hip-hop duo. The Beastie Boys: Say what you want, they are a legendary hip-hop group for their 1st 2 albums alone. BDP Eric B. & Rakim Public Enemy EPMD: Can't believe no one mentioned them. NWA A Tribe Called Quest The Jungle Brothers Gang Starr X-Clan Brand Nubian KMD Black Sheep Black Moon Pete Rock and CL Smooth: could be the face of true East Coast hip-hop (pre-bling) The Pharcyde OutKast Digable Planets: arguably the most underrated group on the list Wu-Tang Clan The Roots The Fugees Black Star Madvillain With shout outs to: JayLib The Beatnuts Tha Alkaholiks Das EFX Stetsasonic Mobb Deep Downtown Science Cypress Hill Camp Lo Thanks for the welcome and that's a helluva list! I likes, I likes!

For reasons already mentioned in an early post I'd crown Outkast the winner if I had to pick one. However, Tribe, GangStarr, PE and Run-DMC are up there. Honorable mentions go out to Whodini, EPMD, the Beastie Boys, the Roots, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, and NWA. I love Digital Underground but they didn't hold it down long enough. Ah hell! Put them in there too.

I'm going with Public Enemy.
No disrespect to the other rap crews, but no other act -- not even Run-DMC -- was as influential in the genre as P.E. From the bombastic baritone of Chuck D. to the understated brilliant idiocy of Flavor Flav to the avant-garde production skills of The Bomb Squad, Public Enemy's hardcore rap was musically and politically revolutionary. P.E. directed hip-hop toward an explicitly self-aware, pro-black consciousness that became the culture's signature from the late '80s to the mid-'90s. [Edited 9/6/06 20:04pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

missfee said: For me its the Wu Tang Clan, for 9 members each had their own creative flow. I loved the way how some could rap faster (RZA) than others who were more laid back (Method Man) then you have the crazy ones (Ghostface, Raekwon, U-God, Ol' Dirty Bastard) and the one who kicked the knowledge (GZA/Genius), and the others (Inspecktah Deck, Cappadonna)
I liked ODB! He was one crazy fool. He didn't have any sense, NONE! But when he let MTV film him and his family going to collect and cash his EBS check, That was too much. The best song that showed off their skills and made me say "Damn gotta play that shit again!!" was a tie between: Proteck Ya Neck and Da Mystery of Chessboxin'

Well thanks. There are those that have a much better handle on the genre like namepeace or CinisterCee (among others). It's not my cup of tea but the ones i've listed are more Old-School that imo are either lyrically skillful, try to raise consciousness or have a very good sense of humor. The Gangsta-rappers and that whole ilk just don't do it for me. Which is why, although they're probably historically viable, NWA/Ice-T/Too Short etc. didn't make my list. Someone I did forget to include was Mos Def. tA Tribal Disorder
